TOPIC: Command Simulation

Command Simulation 6 months, 2 weeks ago #1

So I was curious if anybody would like to do a command simulation campaign like what was done on TC2M? I know there is multiplayer but with the CS you can do a bit more it seems. If anybody would be interested in doing a CS battle or whole campaign post in here and if we get a good amount of people I will start work to set one up.

Good idea!

I remember reading these from the TC2M forum and they always seemed like great fun; combining RPG with RTS. We can even create a new Category on the forum for you if you'd like.

Well if we can get enough people interested and get something going then I would say make a new category. But thanks for being interested.

Hi 26 NC,

Command simulations started on the TC2M forum because multiplayer (SOW) wasn't out yet. (Colonel Kooch was the originator of the concept and got us started. If I remember correctly, the early ones were just before the SOW launch. We kept doing them and have run dozens of simulations over the last few years, admittedly with fewer people once there was an exodus over to SOW.

We just finished a campaign run by Greg (gfran64) that was an alternate invasion of Pennsylvania campaign and it was a lot of fun. Another one starts this weekend. It is a two-player campaign loosely based on the Romney Campaign (January 1862). It might take a few months to complete and will feature gfran64 as Lander's Division vs. scottishsoldier as the Valley District, augmented by elements of the Army of the Northwest.

With the madminute games forum now closed, we were looking for alternatives for continuing command simulations. One of the guys from the sim sub-community was looking at setting up a website for us to organize and report on sims. With the TC2M forums added here, maybe we will migrate over this way, or maybe even convert to SOW-based sims...

Howdy Mad1,
For my first post in years, I would do well to at least read the dates of the post I'm replying to.
I doing fine thanks. Nice to be remembered. RL upended (in a good way), moved, new job, things conspired to take my mind away from SOW, but I'm creeping back.

Hi Mobutu and Tacloban

Its been a while since I have seen posts from you both.I remember how enjoyable the games were played on TC2M
before multiplayer became a feature in the current games. If it moves to either Gettysburg or Waterloo I would
be keen on joining, was a lot of fun.

Hi Remus. It has been a long time. We have still been running TC2M simulations. I just did one that ran from November into February. It was a campaign simulation based on part of the Bath-Romney Campaign (Jan-Feb 1862). It used over 41 modded TC2M maps to create the campaign theatre. We are doing a follow-up campaign this summer that will add some more maps and have carry-over from the previous sim. With the MadMinute Games forum down, the sim has been mostly run the THE WINTER WAR BLOG. (Information on the new sim isn't fully up yet, but some of the new maps are.)

I don't know how to mod or make maps with SOW. (It took me so long to figure out how to do it with TC2M.) Maybe I will try to learn and do my next sim using SOW. I am contemplating something based on the Goldsboro (North Carolina) Expedition, December 1862.

Hi Mobutu

The following is information that you might condider. There is a Mod in SOWGB using the TC2M sprites and OOBS already. There are also historical maps of some of the battles and so long as you are not looking for too many historical maps there are quite a few random maps available. Also the Kriegsspiel group have incorporated many maps that are used in SOW Waterloo and these can be adjusted to work with SOWGB.The multiplayer for both SOWGB and SOWWL are quite adequate and good fun for running large battles although SOWGB is probably the main one for ACW.

Good to hear from you
Remus

Thanks Remus,

I do enjoy making maps, so I am not really looking to piggyback off of other people's maps unless they fit the same campaign theatre. I have made a lot of TC2M maps for simulations (probably somewhere around 75 or 80 maps). The screenshots on the sim blog are all from original maps that I've done. It took me so long and so much frustration to learn how to make a TC2M map, it has been easier to do that than take up SOWGB. (I am not very technically oriented or computer/software savvy.) I looked at the forums here to see what there was on map making, but didn't really understand it very well. SOW came out while I was in Africa and had very limited bandwidth, so I was very late getting it downloaded and never really got working with it.

I guess theoretically it would be possible to run a campaign sim with SOWGB modded maps and have the engagements fought in multiplayer. That would be kind of cool. I am seriously considering a campaign next year set around December 1862 / January 1863 that is set in North Carolina, possibly stretching from Fort Fisher up through Suffolk. It would take a lot of map work! I already know how to do it in TC2M. I don't know how long it would take me to become proficient with SOW map modding.
