I suppose it is the OOB writers job to hand edit the commanders personal and chain of command text. At least right now with what you have the writer of the scenario OOB has a pretty good start.

Why should we do things by hand when they can be done automatically with the same result?

Ideally scenario OOB making would be something that can be done automatically, where the user only has to decide what units to include, not actually do the typing. It's the scenario scripting (or rather, the planning of the scripting) that takes thought and can't be done automatically.

People ideally are only be necessary in modding for their creative minds.

OK I added a simple way to switch between substitute commanders. I haven't yet figured out how moving substitutes around and adding them should work, but it won't be too hard to do once I decide how it should look in the end.

Here's the sample OOB generated again with the substitute commanders included. I tested it in game and it worked.

Here's how it looks in the editor. You just select the commander you want to appear in the tree. All of the commanders appear in the spreadsheet section. When you export as scenario, the commander that's visible in the tree will be used in the scenario file.

And updated again after this discussion about the substitute commanders. In the editor, the primary commander (aka the one that will be used in sandbox mode) is shown in the tree.

The sample OOB is updated also so the commanders are in the right spots for the new method.

The OOB editor will now handle substitute commanders the same way the game's sandbox mode handles them.

Ok I made an OOB, now how do I use it in game? And is it possible to use in multiplayer? I created a folder under the mods folder and placed my oob in there, but it doesn't let me load my mod in game.

The OOB must have a name that starts with "OOB_SB_" and it must be placed in an OOBs folder inside your mod's folder.

Mods are not allowed in multiplayer yet.

but it doesn't let me load my mod in game.

This doesn't tell me much.

For scenario use one thing I noticed that is missing and would be helpful has to do with the ID column generated.

NAME ID

Brig Gen James S Wadsworth OOB_1_1_1_1_0_0_1
Brig Gen Solomon Meredith OOB_1_1_1_1_1_0_1
19th Indiana OOB_1_1_1_1_1_1_1
24th Michigan OOB_1_1_1_1_1_2_1
2nd Wisconsin OOB_1_1_1_1_1_3_1

For scenario use the ID column needs to be:

Brig Gen James S Wadsworth OOB_U_JSWadsworth
Brig Gen Solomon Meredith OOB_U_SMeredith
19th Indiana OOB_U_19_IN
24th Michigan OOB_U_24_MI
2nd Wisconsin OOB_U_2_WI

The units will not show up in a scenario nor are you able to choose a leader without changing the numbers to letters and names.

OOB_1_1_1_1_1_3_1 to OOB_U_2_WI

Hmm, oh I see what you mean, if you're making a master OOB and matching scenario OOBs. The auto-generation works for sandbox oobs but not for scenarios if you remove some of the units for the scenario.

There is an option in the options menu to allow manual editing of the IDs, but what I'll do is have it generate the ID based on the unit name, so it is still automatic.

For instance it'd be easy to do this:

Brig Gen James S Wadsworth OOB_Brig_Gen_James_S_Wadsworth
Brig Gen Solomon Meredith OOB_Brig_Gen_Solomon_Meredith
19th Indiana OOB_19th_Indiana
24th Michigan OOB_24th_Michigan
2nd Wisconsin OOB_2nd_Wisconsin

I'm at school but will fix this next chance I get. Thanks.

I've added a new feature to update the OOB by selecting a startlocs.csv file that you can have the game generate while playing. Run EditOOB.exe and it will get this update automatically.

The startlocs.csv contains the regiment strengths. To update your currently opened OOB with information from the startlocs.csv, there is an option in the Tools menu.

All it does is scan the startlocs file and any regiments that have the same name in both the oob and startlocs will have their strength set to that from the startlocs.

This way when doing a campaign game for instance, after a battle you can update the OOB with the exact casualties from the battle.

Hey Garnier, can you give a quick walkthrough of how to get the startlocs.csv file and how to get it to update with battles? Thanks!

In a game, you press the L key to generate the startlocs.csv containing the locations and strength of all units in the battle.

Then in EditOOB, open an OOB that has units with the same names as the units in the startlocs.csv file (typically the same OOB that the game was using). Then click "Update strengths from startlocs.csv..." and browse to where the startlocs.csv file is located, which will be in the Work folder. Select it and press OK. The editor will then compare the startlocs file with the oob file, and when it finds units with matching names it will copy the unit strength from the startlocs file to the OOB.

I've just made an update to this. Lots of small changes and additions that I found I wanted while I was using it, as well as some bug fixes.

Just run the program and if you haven't turned off the auto-update it will ask you if you want to install the update.

Here are the big changes:

* Many changes to the random OOB generator routine to make them more realistic.
(i.e., higher quality regiments are smaller generally.)
* Added an OOB analyzer that can tell you the difference in numbers/quality between the two sides to make it easier to balance an OOB.
* Added a random historical name generator (the first names, last names and middle initials are all drawn from civil war regimental rosters and then randomly assembled.)
* Fixed the copy function so you can either make a complete deep copy of a unit or just copy the unit itself.
* Added the option to show unit strengths in the tree view. These numbers do not automatically update however, so press Ctrl-R to refresh them.

The bug where occasionally copying units caused a crash is still there, but now instead of crashing it simply doesn't copy the unit. I still have to decide how to solve that one as it's a fairly complicated situation. To workaround it right now just save your OOB and restart the program and copy/paste will work.

Hi Garnier,

Updated as suggested, but can't seem to find the OOB Analyzer on any of the Dropdown Menus. In fact hard to see whether the Auto-update actually took place.

Any suggestions where I can look to check that my D/L worked, and if it did, where do I find the OOB Analyzer?

Thanks for any ideas (only seem to post when I'm asking your help).

I believe I've finished fixing the copy/paste bug. I've been using it for about 6 hours today without any crashes and had copy/paste work the whole time.

The update is live, version 31 now.

This has been updated more in the last week. Here are the changes. (Most recent version is top on this post).

Version 36 -- 4:59 PM 6/12/2010

* More changes to Random OOB Generator for more historical flavor:
* Union batteries more likely to have 6 guns instead of 4, and less likely to have different types of guns in the same battery. (to balance, sometimes one confederate battery will be replaced by two 4-gun batteries so the overall average is 6 guns per battery on each side).
* Union more likely to have more men but less quality, set to balance out on average according to the OOB analyzer.
* Union brigades more likely to have regiments from multiple states while Confederate brigades are usually mostly from one state each.
* Average ratios of regiments from different states match the historical ratios at gettysburg.
* Average ratios of different types of cannon match the historical ratios at gettysburg.
* Average numbers of different weapon types matches the SOW gettysburg OOB.

Version 35 -- 7:38 PM 6/11/2010

* Fixed a mistake in the OOB Generator that made all commanders wear Union uniforms.

Version 34 -- 6:19 PM 6/11/2010

* Fixed a crash when loading an OOB that had a unit which had "ARMY" set to 0.
* Improved OOB Generator performance.
* Adjusted OOB Generator data (to be more historically accurate).

Version 33 -- 0:00 AM 6/8/2010

* The horizontal scroll bar will stay in place when you select different units.
* Changes to the "Analyze Balance" function.

Version 31 -- 0:00 AM 6/6/2010

* Fixed a crash when trying to paste units after other units had been deleted.

This is updated for the new OOB format. It's at version 45 now.

When you open an old OOB with it, it should convert it to the new format, and then you can save it.
The OOB generator/converter should be working with the new format as well, I tested them on a few OOBs.

Was there ever a version of this tool that worked with TC2M OOBs?

Thank you very much for this Editor plus this is a re-release of GarnierEdit.

Re: Order Of Battle Editor 4 years, 7 months ago #57

Hi Garnier,

I have used this program successfully and happily on my old computer with XP. I bought a new computer with Windows 7 and am trying to use this program but for some reason nothing I mod with your editor saves. I can edit them all I want with excel just fine, but not with this program.

What am I doing wrong. I know it's on my end, but I don't know why and am frankly very unfamiliar with Windows 7 (I loved XP).

Thanks in advance and I apologize for my ignorance.

Hi Garnier, thanks for the reply, help and for the mod! I have no idea what was wrong, I removed and re-installed the program twice. I downloaded a new copy, too. Finally, after un-installing it a 3rd time I rebooted the computer, too, and re-installed. All is working at this very moment.

I truly do thank you for the editor. I'm creating OOB's for the entire Atlanta campaign and it has been so helpful.

Thank you again,

James

Hi Garnier,

I have downloaded the OOB editor and can create a US and CSA OOB but where do you save it and how do I actually use it in the game? Have saved the file in all sorts of locations within the game but cannot find it anywhere when looking to load it. Would really like to know how to get it into the Sandbox so i can choose a map and play the battle. I am clearly missing something along the way. Any help would be gratefully received.

Edit: I have the GCM mod installed does that make a difference???

Edit MkII: 90% success - Finally manged to create and load a scenario in the Sandbox. Chose the Antietam map but found a brigade in the middle of a Union division when the game started. Is this map dependant or do I need to do something else to prevent this. A deployment box would be great at the start of Sandbox so you could lay your troops out in a rational/co-ordinated manner!!!

Cheers,

AKL
