TOPIC: Smoke mod

Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #1

I edited TheBaymonster's fine realistic smoke mod and made a light version which does not have so much smoke. I was wondering if I could post it here as long as I don't take credit as I did not really do anything except change the numbers around. I was not sure about the forum rules about mods and I can't seem to get a hold of Thebaymonster. Either way I am cool with the answer, just think it looks great now after a few edits and wanted to share it.

Where is it? I'd like to try.

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #3

I would say if he doesn't respond by the end of the day, go ahead and post it. Usually the general rule with mods is they are pretty much open to anyone to edit, re-post, or do whatever they want with them, as long as they give credit where it is due.

Ok here is TheBaymonster's smoke mod edited for a light version. All credit goes to him, as I just tinkered with the files Download the original Realistic smoke mod, then overwrite the file in the logistics folder ( inside the realistic smoke mod folder) with the file below to try. Always backup your files.

A screen showing my desired effect which is to have white out conditions down on the battlefield but a more lucid view from up above.

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #6

View from above in the same area in the battle.

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #7

A major engagement still gets pretty smokey, but only when there are a lot of units in a small area. The smoke will still become thick, but will dissipate quicker than the original mod never completely obscuring your view unless you are close to being on the battlefield level.

Looks very cool.

I'm going to do a few updates to the released mods topic today and I'll make sure and include this.

I really liked the original mod, but my PC couldnt handle it.

I'm looking forward to trying this one. Will make HITS play very interesting, give you another reason to try and stay removed from the action and test your sense of direction.

Played well on my PC - I tried a division battle, good FPS throughout.

This is a really great MOD - if my PC can handle it i'll make it a regular. I'd even sacrifice sprite ratio for it. Adds a whole new level to HITS.

You can see how poor visibility gets in the first picture when the fighting is heavy - I got attacked on my right first and I couldnt see more then one or two regiments along but he left was clear as day. You have to keep riding up and down the line. Picture 2 shows what happens when you dont look out properly:)

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #13

Glad to hear that the FPS hit is not a major one. It really does make it fun to be down on the ground level because you just can't see when things heat up(without swamping your PC), which adds to the confusion which to me is a big plus.

It was a FPS hit alright, but not a huge one. But, there isnt much vegetation on that map either. With a bigger battle, and vegetation, I could be in trouble

Out of curiosity - is a lite, lite mod possible? Or a series of levels below this but above the stock game?

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #15

Yes a lite, lite is not that hard to do, I will mess around with it some more tonight.

Con20or, try this one: I removed the artillery smoke back to vanilla and adjusted the smoke levels. Let me know how this works for you?
Lite, lite version, to try, Just remember to change the filename back to just "efx" and not "efx 2012-02-09" I don't know why this happended, but it would not let me change the filename for some weird reason and I don't have time to mess with it at the moment, work looms.

Re: Smoke mod 1 year, 4 months ago #20

This is a packed version of this small edit. I hope you don't mind Stevedrumsdw, I only made it so there is no overwriting files, this way you can still keep the original edit intact.

Unzip the contents of this zip into your <drive letter>:\NorbSoftDev\Scourge of War - Gettysburg\Mods directory.

That would be Garnier's darker trees mod combined with my beast of a computer that runs everything on the highest settings just fine.

Finally got around to trying the lite lite version of this, definitely alot liter and easy on the FPS, but then maybe too lite? I could see everything all the time.

Is there room for one between ver 2 and 3? A lite lite ver2.75?
