TOPIC: Want to create your own maps?

Want to create your own maps? 3 years, 3 months ago #1

This is just a reminder that anyone is welcome to join the Map Mod Team and create your own maps. If you are artistically inclined, computer savvy, have some graphic design experience (but it's not required), and the time and patience to dedicate to creating a map (which can take several weeks to months, depending on the detail) then contact us now. All you need is a graphics editing program like Photoshop and we provide the rest. You will work directly with a team of experienced map makers (including SOW developers) that will get you up to speed.

If you are interested, contact me by PM or email:

UPDATE 9/2/15 - We plan to release the map editing tools to the public at some point. So if you are interested in making maps, please be patient as we work to get the tools ready.

Matt,

Would NSD be seeking people to create ACW maps specifically, or could a person join the team to produce maps useful to the Napoleonic mod (and by extension the other 18th century European mods)?

What would NSDs stance be to a member on the team producing maps that were semi-fictional but that suited, for example, my Peninsular Campaign (Spain 1808-1814) but which were somewhat generic and could be used by anyone for SP or MP?

I presume no buildings exist except those made for the ACW maps? I did see a sceenshot that John B. put up here a long time ago that showed a Napoleonic map he was working on. It had some great looking Spanish buildings. Was that work private to him and is no longer available or did NSD take it over?

Thanks.

The map modders are free to create any map they like, as long as it's not planned for an upcoming release. Semi-fictional Napoleonic maps would be great.

I didn't realize John B. was working on a Napoleonic map.. If he did, he never uploaded it to our server.

All,

I'm dying to get hold of the Waterloo maps. I was reading a snippet of WSS info the other day and realized the Battle of Oudenaarde (1708) was fought near Braine l'Alleud, a small city in Belgium very near to the Mont St. Jean - Waterloo area. Hot damn! Real 18th century maps coming our way. WOOT!

Jack,
The town of Braine l'Alleud itself is just on the left edge of the main Waterloo map. Depending on where the fighting was it may or may not be on the WL map.

This area of Europe has been fought over for 100s if not 1000s of years. They call it the "Cockpit of Europe", and that is the old meaning of cock-pit where cock-fighting was staged, not the place an aircraft pilot sits!

Just a few miles east of the Waterloo area are the Ardennes where the Germans came through in 1940 and where in 1944 the American army fought it's most famous defence in the ETO.

The battlefield of Fontenoy is not far away.

I suspect if you put a pin in the map at every battlefield you would hardly have any clear map left.

I’m very glad that NSD is open to members making maps. I had not seen the comment previously, so thanks for clarification.

There are a few versions of Photoshop. Which would you suggest? I’ll buy a copy (assuming it isn’t out of my budget) to see if I can get a handle on it. If so, I'll PM you with more inquiries (I'll probably do so anyhow given my nascence). I’ve never tried anything like this, but I enjoy puzzles and figuring things out. Hopefully the learning curve isn’t too long for me.

Also, are there any restrictions on ACW maps?
Sorry. I suffer from a serious case of typosis. Don't worry, it's not contagious

Re: Want to create your own maps? 3 years, 3 months ago #8

If you've never used Photoshop, there will be a pretty steep learning curve. There are entire college courses dedicated to it. I have been using it for close to 10 years now, and discover new features/methods all the time. I haven't looked into the cost of it in a while but it's over $100. I've been using CS5 for years.

A free alternative is Gimp which is an open source Photoshop wannabe. Also Paint.net (RebBugler uses this). John B. used Paint.net for the Chancellorsville maps.

However if you are set on Photoshop, they have a free trial that I would try out before you buy.

Like I mentioned, you don't really need graphic design experience, but do need to be artistically inclined and able to pick things apart and figure them out. Back when I was first learning maps, LouiRaider (GB and Antietam map creator) gave me basic information over email, and then I developed my own methods from that. It's sort of like playing a musical instrument. You need instruction to learn the instrument, but after that it's up to you to create the music.

I would start out using Paint.NET or maybe GIMP and only think about getting photoshop if you need a particular feature that is only in photoshop. I don't have photoshop, when I was making maps by hand for TC2M I used Paint.NET and GIMP. Paint.NET was easy to use for most things, and GIMP had some really nice features for creating and stroking paths that I used to make error-free roads. (And would be useful for making stone walls in SOW.)

It really doesn't matter what image editor[s] you use, just use whatever you want and try different things.

Any Graphics Editor that can modify and save these files should work...TGA, BMP, JPG, DDS, since these will cover just about all of the editing that one would encounter with the maps.

If, I were just starting and wanted to learn how the maps worked, I would just edit one of the hundreds of maps that Garnier have created.

Just adding fences and houses to any one of those maps will change the appearance of them. This would allow for someone to start altering maps without having to learn the entire process all at once.

The whole process is simple if you understand it, but LP probably said it better than anyone with the reference to an instrument.

Paint Shop Pro can't read/edit DDS files. I'd need another program for that, but I'm sure there's one out there. Thanks.

Do a Google Search for a Paint Shop Pro dds-plugin.

I had to do the same thing with Photoshop it required a dds-plugin.

Can these 5 mile maps be converted into say 7.5 or 10 mile maps? Devils is probably in the detailed graphics so to speak? I am very grateful for all this work, but would like to have about 2-3 miles on Fredericksburg and Lynchburg? I would like to have the towns more centered in the map. Remember I said I am grateful...

The answer to your question is they would have to be redone; there is no way to add any more terrain to an existing map without changing the maps coordinates.

So, any houses, fences, etc… would probably be partially or fully covered once the new coordinates are put into place.

Basically, to put that another way there is no way possible to cut out the center of a map and add terrain to the outer parts of it.

Thanks Davinci,

From what I see, the designers do try to be historic in what the intended release is suppose to be. It's really too bad that the consumer didn't get a "Fredericksburg' when the designers were that close. I don't know the history of Lynchburg so I don't know what was going on NE of the map. Putting towns in the center of "some" maps would allow for more imagination when playing "Sandbox". For example, I have named one of my Sandox Battles "South Defends Fredericksburg", the Salem map allows me to do this. I'll name a Lynchburg Sandbox "South Defends Lynchburg. These are of course defenses positions for the south. I also have "South to Take Fredericksburg" etc, where I take the offenses position....It's all good, but too bad the Salem Map was not a 10 mile map.

Am defiantly interested in map creation. Winter will be upon us soon in central US, hence will have a bit of free time. Have modded other game engines in the past. Seems most games have different editing software for modding. Am curious how difficult map creation is for SOW.

Ok this is a Question for Mr. Garnier. Am not able to Unpack the Random GCM maps. Are these maps un-packable to point where they can be viewed & edited in Power Render?

Use the attachment below and download it onto the Desktop.

Then place it into the folder that you created for Garnier 's map. Basically the folder that shows all of the map files.

Now, use the PowerRender program and check on the splat2.lpj file and the map will open.

Am having a problem un-packing the RandomMap_399.LSL file. TC2M-unpacker un packs a file not viewable in Gimp, Power Render , nor PSP 7. Is there a different Un-Packer? Or are these maps editable?

You really don’t have to use any third party programs to edit the maps…such as TC2M unpacker .

There is a default program located in the PR6 \ Utility folder called LibEdit .

Use this program to extract the files that are located in the LSL file and place them into a folder.

Then use the file that I attached above to Open the map with the PR Program .

Only use the files from the PR6 to edit the maps other than programs such as…Photoshop, etc…

The knowledge from the forums is un-surpass able.. PR6 is an awesome tool, do humbly appreciate your quick response to forum question. I will try not to make a habit of alot of questions, when I get more familiarized with the engine. Will just have to go from there.

Sorry for not responding. We are so busy with Waterloo development right now, we're having a hard time keeping up with the potential map modders. Check your PM.
