@ reb: not sure why I sometimes see a pale yellow overlay on the b&f mod as seen on this screenie. 2560x1440, latest version of the mod.

That's by design. Gives the player a fast heads up as to a units fatigue stress. Yellow is Winded, it appears first, then varying shades of red lead to Exhaustion. This feature, Fatigue Alerts, has been around awhile...so, so much for a heads up for some.

ah ha! Thank you sir.

As a side note, I am using the hi res version and the shading extends off the toolbar to the right. No biggie

Well that's encouraging! - posts about a yellow tint on the gui which has nothing to do with this thread!

The Screenshots look nice, but the color of the water texture appears to mess with the view of the terrain.

Just My two cents worth!

I'm not sure what you mean Davinci? Does it interfere with the terrain 3d view, or is the colour clashing in some way?

"Jolly" - Yes, "Colour Clashing" would probably be a better way of putting it, it's too light in color, which causes a noticeable difference with the ground and the trees.

This change would have to be fixed in the (lsl) file, and Not with what you are doing.

But, if You and Reb, find the color alright, disregard this comment!

No biggie, but an oversight nonetheless. When this feature was designed and tested I was using a resolution that displayed the toolbar the entire width of the screen, so this graphics error never appeared. However, last year I got a new computer and expanded the resolution to 1366x768 where the error did show up, but I never noticed it until now...Duh

B&F update coming soon with this fix and some other upgraded stuff...

Now back to Jolly's terrain thread, apologies for the interruption.

Ok Davinci -

But it's the LSL file textures that I've worked on! How else would I be doing this?
Unless you mean something else?

Anyway, you don't like the water, which is fair comment.

I tried to make the water texture (water_real.jpg) as a reflection of the sky, giving more of a river look.

"Jolly" - I wasn't trying to be harsh or anything like that, I just thought \ think that it is too noticeable in the current shade that you are using.

I don't have all of the correct files loaded, sort of playing another game as of now, but something like the picture below, where the water doesn't collide with the terrain.

That's got some nice looking stuff going on Davinci.
I'll still go by trying the sky reflection method for now, it can always be adjusted I guess.

Also, I did 'tweak' the Height Map on this, which sets the river a tad bit lower, like its carving its way along as such, and a few other things become more definitive, like the Little Round Top rocks.

Cheers,

Jolly - Thanks,

Where is the "DD2.dat" file, I seem to be missing it?

Since the Map doesn't have any rocks or boulders, I going too guess that all of them are located in that file.

EDIT Post - I think that I figured it out, I just renamed the original DD_RT.dat to DD2.dat - and the boulders are now on the map!

Ran this mod last night with a scenario test-play. Overall, some very nice improvements, or differences, depending on one's preferences. From a distance the water color matching the sky color looks OK. However, up close, the water appears 'not of this world'. Davinci characterized it differently, but that's my take.

My bottom line preference for terrain treatments is 'Realism'. If that's not met, total immersion is hindered.

I'm trying to find a muddy glossy effect, that doesn't stand out too much, but water files are sort of hard to get right.

I'll dip my toes in it again!

The water files are extremely hard to adjust right, and it seems that every map requires a different water texture to look right.

I wonder if Photoshop has a glossy shiny water filter plug-in that we are unaware of?

I don't think that would do it anyway. We don't have much to go on other than trying to get a decent look on the water texture that tiles without looking daft (or alien as Reb puts it)!

Here's another attempt for now ...

Waternew.jpg

some unwanted grass sprites in there, but I think that can be sorted.

To remove the grass in the water you need to place a 2 pixel buffer zone around the water in the Mapname.bmp file.

That is one of the flaws in the map design, it will place objects at least two-pixels at the wrong coordinates.

Too blue - Gettysburg creeks were sort of muddy or dry during that particular battle iirc.

Ah, so they'd more or less dried up?
That puts a completely new slant on all things water for this.

I've got some ideas though!

I think this more like it - parts of the creeks dried up/shrunken more.

This Picture was taken off the Internet, and absolutely doesn't belong to Me. So, I will probably have to remove it very soon.

But, this is sort of what I'm trying to say, there is No "Blue" some parts of the creeks were dry and blended into the terrain. Other parts were wet, but not around the Round-Tops, IIRC.

Thanks for the pic Davinci.
I do think some sort of compromise is needed regarding this though. To make it clearer which are creeks and not some sort of trail paths.

I'm working on a update as I speak - should be finished in a day or two!

True, but your work never seems to disappoint!

Have you thought about placing names on the terrain, and each individual road?

So, when the men are standing on "Devils Den" or any of the other known places the name shows in the Toolbar.

"To make it clearer which are creeks and not some sort of trail paths"

If I may suggest, give the creek bottoms a rock texture, with various deep areas containing pools. Dried up creeks almost always have rocky bottoms, easy to differentiate from dirt roads with gravel, or trails with just dirt.

Good Idea, "Reb"

Also - as shown in the picture, place a few muddy boulders here and there in the creeks that are partially submerged in the ground.

Well, You won't believe it but, that is exactly the look that blends it great with the current terrain.

Placing down some scrubs and undergrowth along the creek banks will enhance that look a lot better.

Excellent Work!
