  • I'm stuck with the Young Guard about 131 points away from winning WL08 with a Promotion. I'm tired of playing WL08!

What are the effects of proceeding to WL09 and WL10 without scoring enough for Promotion in WL08, please?

    Thanks!

  • Now I cannot check, but I don't think they're linked scenarios with carryover, so they're standalone regarding the results

  • There are carryover scenarios indeed and the stock game identifies them. I can't recall if it's one or two, but, my best recollection is that there is only one identified by the game.

So, those scenarios which are not identified by the game itself as carryovers are probably not linked and are stand-alone. That is my best guess.

  • Me too (see my previous post about WL08)!

Bored stiff of playing WL08 but don't want to walk away, because it's one of the last scenarios before I finish them all, and then there's nothing really left for me in SoW (offline only).

I asked in my post, if someone, particularly the scenario designer, could give me some help in terms of how to win the scenario, but received limited help.

  • It has been a year since I looked at this scenario but here goes. This is a scenario where you must attack directly with all of the infantry, primarily staying to the open ground above and below the village itself. The attacks should be oriented to bring your forces to bear on the church, which must be taken to win. For extra style points if you can entice the Prussians into attacking the cavalry on your right early, that will often bring them into the fight. Watch at all times for random Prussian cavalry squadrons. It can also help to be aggressive in bringing your artillery up to closer ranges and placing them where they have a decent field of fire.

There is nothing magic about this one, but you must be relatively aggressive in your attacks to avoid running out of time.

    Best of luck.

  • Thx for replying, Jim.

That's exactly what I have been doing.

    SPOILERS

It seems that no matter how quickly and aggressively I advance on the church, once there I simply cannot get the Prussians out of the church quickly enough to be able to gain the victory points necessary to win the scenario.

I usually end up with 1 brigade firing on the church from 2 sides plus a battery firing from the left of the church and sometime even another firing across the little valley through which the road runs. The other brigade clears and occupies the high ground to the right of the village and usually has to deal with the cav.

You need about 10 mins, I reckon of holding the church to win, and the best I've done is kick the Hun out for a couple of minutes, and then they counter-attack, so the victory location becomes contested and I earn no more points.

I've tried driving the whole div on AI all-out attack, and I've tried micro-managing all the btns and batteries, but it doesn't seem to matter what I do.

Give me 45 mins instead of 30, and I'm good. 30 mins is too tight.

It's all down to how to get hose damned Prussians out of the church post haste, and I can't crack it!

  • Have you tried asking the cavalry on your right for support? I did and they chased off the Prussian horse and pinned much of the infantry in squares which were quickly destroyed. Pretty easy to surround the church then...

  • Thx for your comment, Deeler.

I have tried that, but none of Duhesme himself or the two brigade commanders seem to be able to get support from the cav. positioned on their right flank.

I've tried asking for support on the right, on the left, and in the centre, but they only seem to mobilise when threatened themselves.

How did you get them to help?

  • I didn't know that you could ask them for help. I guess I need to figure out how to send a Courier message to that Cavalry.

It's easy: whilst your most senior officer is selected, just click on the "C" in the toolbar (if you're using the grognard toolbar - not sure where it is otherwise) and then the envelope symbol with a "+" on it. This brings up a list of senior officers from whom you may request support.

Click on a name (once you've sussed out who you need support from) and then click on the "Support" tab at the top of the window, which will give you a variety of options for requesting cavalry or infantry support to your front centre, right flank, etc.

You need to double click on the support type you need; single click doesn't work.

Then at the bottom of the window you'll have the full message you're about to send.

Check it and then click "Send" and you'll see the courier shoot off.

Unfortunately in my experience nothing usually happens!

  • WL stock scenarios don't need help from friendly forces via support or any other 'send courier for help' messages in order to achieve a Major Victory. Having said that, help may be needed from friendlies, depending on the scenario, but courier messages are never a required part of the testing procedures in determining the victory conditions.

I think it's cool that some folks have had success in asking for support and getting it, it shows off the flexibility of the game and is downright realistic.
...so carry on with what works for you. :)
