There really seems to be an explosion in the number of people playing couriers of late - which is great to see.

I would be curious to see how many of you are now playing with couriers.

Couriers - are the only way to play, this is one of the best features in this game.

Couriers is only one aspect of the games unique features. HITS is another, and brings an entirely new dimension to the game, making it feel like you're in an FPS, yet an RTS is going on around you. My interest in the game has been completely refreshed and renewed since I began playing HITS with a plyrradius=2 setting.

You never get bored of fighting over the same battle maps, because you never see enough of them!

HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.

Our kriegsspiel group has been growing well since the new year, and we have players on both sides of the Atlantic. There are about 25 in the group, of whom about 2/3rds are 'active' in MP. I know several of the others have been waiting for the stability to improve before fully jumping-in, so with the latest promising developments, I am hopeful they will now do so.

Everyone in the group is very appreciative of the efforts that Norb & the team have been making to get things right.

We now have regular games starting at 7.30 pm GMT on weekday evenings. We play with both HITS and couriers in all our games, as we are looking for a historical experience of command. Our games also use a chain of command - depending on numbers available we may have human players at up to 3 levels of command. We are open to use any of the maps, and our games often feature manoeuvre as well as battle. Our games are played in a friendly (and often humorous) spirit.

All are welcome to join us by the way, so if this sounds like your thing, send me a private message and we'll take things from there.

In the MP community, no doubt more people play without couriers. That doesn't mean in any way it's better to play without couriers than with them, though.

I don't particularly like playing courier by brigade. Seems to me very few brigade commanders sent couriers to their regiments telling them to wheel one way or the other or to change formations and such. I mean. . . I've played courier games where I sent literally hundreds of couriers in an hour and a half battle.

To me, the realistic way to play couriers is courier by division, and then don't tc the ai brigade commanders, just give them movement and stance orders (defend, probe, attack, etc.). But most of the GCM MP players (including me) prefer to micromanage their regiments, so we play courier games only on rare occasions.

Couriers and HITS and I hope to find someone who can mod to include cavalry brigades so that we can utilize the horsemen for scouting and screening and pursuit of a defeated foe ... okay and protecting the odd artillery battery position, if nothing else is on offer. ;)

And I prefer - if we don't have any players in the brigade positions - to play as a division CO and do as KG-Soldier describes don't tc them and give them only movement and stance orders rather than micro-manage them.

I agree with KG_Soldier on this one. Too many couriers running about at Brigade level.

I play Courier that way also - I take command of every Brigade/Battery in my command, primarily just to get them where I want them to go. Once in action, I will release the Infantry Brigades to fight on thier own. I keep the Batteries under my command, though. They do some odd things if you don't. After the action has started, if I need to move a brigade to somewhere, or advance, I'll ride over and TC from the commander. This is my nod to history, along the lines of "If you want it done right, do it yourself." Failing that, I'll send a blank courier to the Brigade in question, them TC from there. This can be a real nail-biter, as you have to have the discipline to watch and wait for the courier to arrive before you can use the Brigade in question.

Another note - someone said earlier about some of his troops heading off in the wrong direction or down the wrong road. Does the name W.H.L. Wallace ring a bell? On the 1st. day at Shiloh, his Division was ordered to march to the Shiloh area Battlefield. He received the orders, got his men moving on time and, because of crappy maps or whatever, proceeded to take the wrong road. He got lost and spent the whole day marching around Tennessee, reaching the Battlefield that evening.
Sounds like you had a bit of real-life there, eh? Is this a great game or what?

Seems to me very few brigade commanders sent couriers to their regiments telling them to wheel one way or the other or to change formations and such.

Wheeling still happens 'by magic' even when using Couriers at Brigade ;) Apart from this, I like the fact that I can either rely on the regiment's commander (in this case the AI) or send them an order. Unless they're within shouting distance that involves someone going and telling them.
I am amazed by how much the game changes when playing Courier and Hits, in lots of ways. The last 3 hours + of play I've been involved in have resulted in 0 casualties in one game (we never found the enemy) and a tiny number of casualties in the other (though this one froze after 90-odd minutes just as the fighting was about to start). Despite this, they've been fascinating and tense.

    Tank,

Yes, brother, I still have a bit o' nails left. It's also why I tend to only play as a Division Commander, allbeit with really big Divisions like Ed Johnson's 2nd. Day Division - 5 Brigades, a slew of Batteries. Works. Anything more is just too much. Also, the way I play forces me to always be on the front lines and moving, WITH the ever-present possibility of being shot.

It would be helpful if the inbox was highlighted when you have an unread message. Even if you have ticked the option to open new messages autoimatically, the game will not do this if you are using the courier message window or the OOB function when the courier arrives. I'm sure that's for the best, but unless you check regularly you can easily miss a message.

I think it's reasonable to have some kind of prompt in this case, as one of your staff would have alerted you if a message arrived while you were temporarilly otherwise engaged.

I am very flexible playing the game and in the same battle, if it is long, I can play with couriers, giving orders directly, using the map...first person or 50 yds over head. It will depend.

As it is a 3D game the constantly use of interface and cameras make me playing on that way.

So if you re in the mood the game lets you play a "non official" "autocensure type of playing" pseudoHITS mode :)

Of course I am reffering to single player.

For now, I should not be able to conduct decently something more than a brigade in a serious way if the multi is HITS. maybe in a near future.

what is HITS ??? Thanks in advance ...

This is Abner Monroe Perrin born Edgefield County, South Carolina born Feb 8th 1827 fought in Gettysburg and other engagements.

"Maj. Gen. Edward "Allegheny" Johnson's division was captured on May 12, 1864, units from the Third Corps—including Perrin's brigade—were called in to help. Leading his troops in a spirited counterattack through a very heavy fire, with his sword in hand, Perrin fell from his horse pierced by seven bullets. He died instantly.

Perrin is buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Fredericksburg, Virginia." source wiki

    Headquarters In The Saddle

Basically you play with the camera locked to your character, and give orders only by courier in most cases. Its the most realistic form of play.
