Just finalized my hotel & car rentals for the fall trip. Will arrive in Gettysburg Fri pm, Oct 20 (driving from Dulles). Three nights in the G-burg area. Leaving Monday morning (10/23) for Antietam/Sharpsburg. One night in area (Harper's Ferry, actually). Fly home Tuesday late afternoon.

Am sacrificing some convenience for cheap. Will stay in Chambersburg for the Gettysburg leg of the trip -- and at Harpers Ferry while exploring Antietam. Wife won't be traveling with me after all, so will probably pass on the horseback riding this time. Looking forward to it. Hope to see lots of GCM'ers, Norbsofters and others there!

Any recommendations for possible gathering places in or near Gettysburg for:

    Friday evening 10/20/2017?

Saturday morning breakfast before heading to the battlefield (Colbert's suggestion)?

    Saturday evening?

What about touring the field itself on Saturday and/or Sunday? Options include:
    1) Everyone's on their own (since individual interests will differ)
    2) Go together using some pre-agreed itinerary?
    3) All chip in to rustle up a battlefield guide?

    Thoughts?

Have a good time folks, drink one for me, hope you do it again in a year or two and I'd be there for sure. Either way I'll be visiting those battlefields after I become a bit more established. Edit- Maybe try Chickamauga or Shiloh next time, those are in my back yard. I'm sure Razorback could even provide free lodging. :cheer:

  • I am good with whatever we end up doing. I will probably just tag with whomever, as I have been to Gettysburg several times to see the field. As for breakfast there are any number of good places to go to. Feel free to go through this list and pick whatever you guys want to meet at if we end up doing it. I am not particular.

My wife and I (MacLeod) will be there 20th, staying through weekend, traveling down to Sharpsburg on Monday, traveling onto Harpers Ferry on Tuesday then on back west.

Looking over possible locations for gathering Friday eve 10/20 and then again Saturday eve 10/21. How about these?

Friday: Garryowen Irish Pub (middle of town on Chambersburg St.). Gets good reviews, with a variety of food and drink. garryowenirishpub.net/

Saturday: Dobbin House Tavern (in town on Steinwehr Ave/Emmitsburg Road). Nineteenth Century Style/historic building/American alehouse & restaurant. Reviews are good but say food in the main restaurant is pricey. Maybe the tavern would be more appropriate for our crew? www.dobbinhouse.com/

If anyone knows these or has better recommendations, chime in!!

  • Out of those two definitely prefer the pub. Another good option is O'Rourke's, which is right across from the 1863 Inn.

We have been to both O'Rourke's and Dobbins house tavern.
O'Rourke's is basically a sports bar.
Dobbins house tavern is a dimly lit tavern that goes for the historical feel.
The bartenders waiters/waitresses dress in period clothes.
The food is about the same at both.

We have been to both a couple of times and enjoyed both

Would O'Rourke's & Dobbins be preferable to Garryowen?

  • Can confirm that Dobbins is pricey. Just about every item on their dinner menu was over 20 dollars, if I remember correctly.

The Dobbins house has 2 places to eat one is fancy/pricey and the other is a bar where the servers dress in 1800s garb.
The bar downstairs isn't too pricey probably about the same as Orourkes and or Gary Owen

Keith (who doesn't have forum access), put in a suggestion for the "Blue & Gray" at the southeast corner of the main square in Gettysburg. How does it compare to the other 3 places we've discussed?

I propose that those who are planning to go vote for the best 2 of the 4. We need probably a pub/bar/saloon-type place for Friday eve (since people will be trailing in during the day), and place for nice, but inexpensive, dinner on Saturday when everyone will be there.

The 4 places seem to have boiled down to:

    1) The Dobbin House (www.dobbinhouse.com/)
    2) O'Rorkes Family Eatery (ororkes-family-eatery.business.site/)
    3) Garryowen Irish Pub (garryowenirishpub.net/)
    4) Blue & Gray Bar & Grill (www.bluegraybargrill.com/)

Colbert suggested that the group meet for breakfast Saturday morning before heading out. A good idea, but I probably won't join for breakfast because pre & post sunrise is primo time for picture taking. In any event, it might be a good idea to decide on where/when for the group to meet on the battlefield Saturday morning if we're walking it as a group.

Garryowen would be excellent for Friday. I, for one, really enjoy that place.

Dobbin house is good, I have eaten several times at the expensive side but never in the tavern. The tavern intrigues me.

Been to blue and gray and O'Rorkes. Nothing special at either place. Average. Perfectly acceptable.

    I vote for Tommy's Pizza :P

  • As long as we don't go to the expensive side of Dobbin's any of them are fine with me. I lean O'Rorkes, but that's just because I've eaten there before. As I said, any of them is good.
Though Tommy's Pizza is really good. I'll probably go there for lunch at some point during the weekend.

OK, trying to finalize plans. Here's what I propose:

    Friday Eve
Garryowen Irish Pub 7:00 pm to whenever
    Saturday
Breakfast (for those interested) at (TBD) ~ 7:30am?
    Saturday Battlefield Walk
Meet at Copse of Trees 9:00 am
    Saturday Eve
Dinner at The Dobbin House (the cheap side) 7:15 pm (Sunset is around 6:30pm)
    Sunday TBD

    Additional comments/refinements?

This sounds great - very jealous as i would love to see it again but I am on the wrong side of the Atlantic unfortunately. I was lucky enough to go there in 2012, one year before the 150th anniversary and had Norb and Jim as tourguides - one of the best day-trips I have ever been on.

BTW, I'm planning on taking a group photo at the Angle/Copse of Trees Saturday morning at 9:00 when the group has gathered.

I'm very happy that you all get to gather together for this great trip to Gettysburg. If there is any chance of you posting pictures and comments on the forum here it will be very appreciated. Some of us can only enjoy Gettysburg through the words and pictures of others. Thank you. RDBoles

Can you tell which image was doctored? Neither can I.

A handful of G-burg and Antietam photos from the trip

The wide panorama was taken from atop Longstreet Tower at the south end of Seminary Ridge. Perspective runs from the red Sherfy Farm and Peach Orchard at left to Big Round top at far right.

For good measure, here are images from Antietam's 150th in 2012
