This might be a stupid question but how do I stop my commanders riding in front of their units thus exposing themselves to enemy fire?

I have played this Waterloo battle twice on normal difficulty and have occupied both Papellote and La Haie as well as the objective location yet the battle is deemed inclonclusive.
Am I missing something?

I cannot see any representation of voltigeurs as I would recognise them with the tall plume on their shako's.Am I mistaken somehow?
