I really should not be surprised

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

I really should not be surprised

Post by norb »

MS and Windows 7, very pretty, nice new features. But I really should not be surprised by their ability to screw something very simple completely up.

All my computers in my home are networked to a small file server that I back up. It is accessed by different OS's and has worked for a long time. In order to help the rest of the family, they each have their documents folder located on this little file server. It's been very easy from 98 up till vista to go to the my documents folder and point it to a folder on the server. It's worked for years. But not anymore!!!!

Windows 7 decided to screw it all up and I'm really shocked at myself for being surprised by their ability to take a very simple thing and completely F it up.

Now when I try to add the network folder it says that it's not indexed and can't be added. How do you get around this? You can make it available offline. You can make it copy the 100 gigs of pictures to your local computer to make it available offline, then it would be indexed. What a piece of crap solution!!! Even if I could do it because my wife with the gigs of pictures has the home version and that does not have that feature. So there is this homegroup thing and a bunch of other excuses. It's all BS.

This is such a basic feature. Redirect a folder. Make documents save to the network rather than locally and they F-ed it up. I'm sure there are work arounds. But it just pisses me off about how they think they know better than everyone else about how to use computers.

RANT OVER!

Norb, your rant, along with other complaints I've heard, is why I'm just going to just buy XP for my new computer. Whatever faults it has, I know how to work with it.

My friends and I love to write and record music, and for the recording programs we use, XP is by far the easiest to do it with.

Vista and Windows7 are just chock full of difficulties when trying to run a recording program.

And I understand your frustration, in regards to their thinking they know better than us. At times, they seem completely out of touch.

That's my 2cents.

Thanks Oliver, these links are the same stuff I found while searching for the solution. There is no good solution. My file server is windows 2000, so there is nothing that I can do to do it right. I did find another link that had some other options:

Completely understand the frustration, Norb! Which brings up the question: Can/Should Windows 7 be utilized for the new game?

Thanks

I took one of my xp boxes, installed windows search 4, shared a folder, then tried to add it to the library. No go. I'm guessing that there is some stuff in professional that can't be done in home version. btw - my xp professional with search installed CAN index network folders. What a crock!!! So it works on xp & Vista, but not on 7. Ahhhh!

Windows 7 can run the new game. We've had some issues running in windowed mode, but full screen works fine and is tested. Some can run in windowed mode, so there is something we need to figure out.

I use XP for recording as well. What program are you using to record? I use Pro Tools, I have for years. I do have Windows 7 on a second partition, but I won't even attempt to install Pro Tools on that.. :)

I've been pretty impressed with Windows 7 so far. I was even able to install an old 2003 version of Quicken with no problems. Seems much more stable/compatible than Vista was, but I really haven't used it long enough to see it's true self. :)

The program I use is Cool Edit Pro. They were bought out by Adobe, who changed the program.
The two friends I write with also use Cool Edit Pro. One of them, who also does the mixing and mastering, uses the program on an old Windows98. His mixes rival any I've ever heard.
But it's not as good a program as Pro Tools, which we are all hoping to get eventually.

Well, I know this may or may not help any of you out, but go to this posting, and read what Microsoft is not really telling people out there.

It's called GodMode.

My Brother just passed this on to me to give a read over.

Here is the Posting.

Hello again.

I should have mentioned one critical point before I sent my earlier post (above), read all of the pages on the site listed above.

People have mentioned that using Godmode in Windows can have unwanted effects like crashing windows, and without some knowledge of windows itself, I would suggest not trying it.

Appears that very little is gained from Godmode anyway.

Just thought I would add my 1/2 cent to this topic.

Cheers.
