... I am sure there is a simple fix... but being to MP newbie that I am, I dont have the answer for this problem. I log into multiplayer, plug into a game with others.... but get the ""Failed to server" message constantly (6 times now). I have completely disconnected my firewall/internet security to see if that was the issue... to no avail. HELP!!
I had this same problem last night (I was really scratching my head because I've never had trouble connecting to anyone)... After scratching my head some more, I uninstalled/reinstalled the game and much to my surprise, it worked.

Maybe something for you to try after you have exhausted all other possibilities.

Do you have a router?

If so, you have to open/forward a specific port (31791). When you are sure that your port is open, you can disable the automatic port mapping of the game by adding "MapPort=0" (without "") to the [Initialization] section of the SOWGB.ini.

..... Where would I find SOWGB.INI ? I have searched my computer and I have no file called SOWGB.INI. The game is fully loaded, playable in single player mode... and beyond my issue with multiplayer seems to be working normally.....

You probably are not showing extensions of known file types (a very stupid MS ?feature?)

It is in the Work folder of your game install. Unless you turn on extensions, you probably won't find it. But the icon looks like a little notepad with a gear thing on it, or at least that what the default icon look like on XP. Without extensions it's just called sowgb

There is a feature where I can talk to your router from the code and automatically map the port from your router to your machine. It's called mapport. It takes a few seconds, but it saves a lot of people a lot of trouble. Problem is that for some reason it causes problems on some networks. I have no idea why, it's pretty standard code.

Anyway, we have an ini file option to turn off the feature, but no interface for it. So if someone wants to turn it off, they have to edit the ini file.

... I've been having issues since I added the Beta... perhaps this is it. However... I'm still confused as to what I need to adjust. I'm not at all sure what "gui" is? I open the .INI file... add "portmap" as a line? If so where in the file? Set it to "=off" ? Sorry for my ignorance Norb. Not much of a techie...
