SOW and multi core rigs
I have a quad core machine and I downloaded a nifty little app that tracks the usage of each core independently. I have bought two games that I play a great deal; Rise of Flight (ROF) a WWI flight sim, and Scourge of war (SOW). ROF is a very cutting edge game that duo core machines struggle with. When I review the core use all four cores are close to maxed out. According to FRAPS I run that game with somewhere between 25-35 FPS which is good enough for a flight sim. However, when I run SOW I find only one core is used. The others are flatlined. FRAPS tells me that I am running SOW at a consistent 12fps.
So, my question is: Does this game have any possiblity of using more than one processor core (or is my nifty little app not so nifty?). If not are there plans to take this game to the next level and start using mutli core capability. If the game is running on one core thats fine, it works great, but think of the possibility with double or even quadruple the processing power :cheer:

Re: SOW and multi core rigs
It has not, but I'm sure that Norb will consider it for the future and maybe he will add it if it is possible.
Re:SOW and multi core rigs
this explains the lag i experienced, i thought it was maybe i needed more ram, i have 2Gb. I have a quad core and if only one is being used i might as well run SOW on a 4 year old machine, something like an Athlon XP cpu. I wonder what the game testers were using to put the game through its paces?

Re:SOW and multi core rigs
The important thing is RAM. 2GB isn't enough for bigger scenarios and everything set to best since the OS and other programs need RAM too. That means that your computer has to transfer data to the swapfile and accessing data there costs performance.

Re:SOW and multi core rigs
I have 4 gigs of ddr3 ram and even then I get only 12fps which is very playable, units move smoothly and to be honest I could care less if the load and fire animations aren't Disney smooth. Now in a flight sim....
It is a tricky road to follow. Build for cutting edge machines and you lose a lot of the middle and low end players. Build for the low end and a lot of the high end players grumble. Personally, I think the right call was made for this game and this audience. I do however, wonder what we could have if the game was made for multi core rigs.

Re:SOW and multi core rigs
It would be a welcomed feature if this could be added in one of the later patches, I also have a quad core system , but I also understand that Norb is just a single person that has to use his time doing, so much!
It takes several different programmers each focusing one or two things and hopefully meeting somewhere in the middle for the final product.
So, I vote to…..
1) Fix the CTD
2) Release the SDK
3) Release the Map Tools – and restrict them to Single Player Only
4) Patches, Patches, Patches
5) Start on a Napoleon Style game
6) Release the Map Tools, yes this is a repeat in-case number three was ignored!

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Re:SOW and multi core rigs
I also have a Quad core but to be honest I’m starting to think it was a waste of money as very few games use them. I don’t even think Napoleon Total war uses all four. Hopefully SOW will make use of more cores in the future.
Re:SOW and multi core rigs
Well it is kinda frustrating I can play ANY game out there with max resolution and effects, my quad core and dual HD 3d cards makes it possible, but SOW makes my pc scream in pain even with quite small battles.
I got 5fps with the Buford senario, with my corps toturial I get 7 and thats with periodoic freeses were the whole game stops for sevral seconds.

Re:SOW and multi core rigs
Same for me Gunfreak I can run Empire and Napoleon Total war on ultra settings but SOW seems to labour a bit. I don’t mind the graphics not being as good as really cutting edge games like TW because there’s more to games than graphics but I’d like it to run smoothly since I bought the best system I could buy in my Town with playing SOW in mind.

How do you know how many frames per sec you are getting? I’d love to check it out.
I’m starting to really enjoy SOW now I just wish it would run smoother .

Jubal Early,
Here you go with Thanks to Little Powell who posted this in another Thread :
"Open up your SOWGB.ini file located in the Work folder.
Add the following to the file:
[Debug]
DbgLvl=1
The FPS will be displayed in the top left corner of the game.
Please note: although no board code and smiley buttons are shown, they are still usable."
