Just bought game but pretty much unplayable as I'm only getting 5 or 6 FPS

Post by Arkley0712 »

Hi all,

I have installed the game and activated it but am getting very low FPS - as low as 5 or 6 FPS sometimes and never more than about 9 or 10. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.01 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64 bit
Geforce GTX 260 graphics card with 896 MB dedicated video memory

My CPU is probably the weakest link in my system but overall this is not a bad rig.

Any ideas? Should I upgrade my RAM?

What options are you running with? Turn them all down, then slowly move them back up.

Since your running win7 64bit Id say up that ram by 2 at least
its an upgraded vista which is ram intensive
My last cpu was that very one and its a decent cpu
probably wont let you run at max settings tho

Ark make sure you have the latest vid drivers installed and make sure with Dxdiag that there are no errors and you have the latest there as well.

You have a mid-low rig but you should be able to play just fine. As norb said, tune down all options to the minimum and work your way up slowly till you reach a good compromise.

As a matter of fact, if you play with camera restrictions you will ALWAYS be at the ground level and at this level the Uniform sprites are VERY detailed and take a lot of memory.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. After disabling off-map terrain/trees and dialing down "% trees" to 50%, I'm getting FPS in the 10-15 range now, which is just about playable. I still think that's pretty low for my machine though. As for it being a mid to low spec PC, well it plays just about every other game I own on max settings with little slow down.

I'll take all the other steps suggested and probably invest in about 4 GB of shiney new RAM and see if that helps.

Thanks again.

*If* I am not mistaken, there are ways to reduce the number of men displayed in each regiment.

That SURELY will take off a huge weight from the video card. In Div to Div combat we have 4bdes with 4 regiments each. That makes 32 regiments and 16 guns per side... quite a lot on open field to draw all that.

Your card has barely 1Gb on board ram so that's where you should work probably. Of course RAM membanks never hurt (Windows alone takes out 1Gb so... ). I think the CPU is ok but you know every game handles things differently, no hardware represents a foul-proof guarantee by itself.

How do you reduce the number of troops? I haven't seen anything in the options but maybe I haven't looked hard enough

Options - on page one \ Custom Difficulty Settings \ AI Regiment Strength

Anything over ( 100 ) adds by a precentage of regiment

Anything under ( 100 ) minus by a precentage of regiment

Don't quote me on the ( precentage thing )!

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Now, does that just reduce the ratio of men present to actual size (i.e. keeps the regiment at the same historical strength but represents it w/less people on screen) or does it reduce the actual historical strength of the regiment?
