Courier system: on Bde or higher..BUT still can move units by clicking gournd

Post by apoll »

OK...for some reason, I don't think the courier system is working right for me. I have it set for the lowest level of command..Brigade...and yet, as Brigade commander, I can still click a unit flag, and then left click the ground ... and the unit moved there after the courier rider goes to the unit. I thought I could ONLY use the send message menu to move my units, as it was in reality. What am I doing wrong? Why is it not working for me? I had it last night on nthe edmo BEFORE I purchased the game...now after purchase, doesn't seem to be working. Grateful any suggestions.

It's working as designed and you're doing nothing wrong.

You can use the send message screen, but you don't have to. The "orders by courier" option is for delaying the execution of orders, where couriers will be automatically sent to issue the orders.

Oh I see. So...not to force using the message menu...still can point and click? Ok, I guess that works...replicates pointing out to the messenger the ground where you want the unit to go. I can live with that. I guess FULL realism would have absolutely everything done by message..no clicking and pointing, but that might become a bit hard. But it would be totally immersion...

Well to me its kinda realistic anyway. It is like some times the commander didnt always send a note with orders he just sent the runner/courier saying move there etc and engage etc.
Basically to me thats whats happening if you point and click, the courier still has to move to the brigade with the "order".

Orders by bde is working like a charm, what I personally miss is the orders by rgt so that my subordinate bde general further sends his orders on to each separate regiment but it's wad as it is. Some of the options get overridden by the difficulty settings and this might be the case.

For example, if you set the camera restriction to 100 yds and then move the difficulty to historical, you will still read 100 but in game you'll be restricted to 0. The same goes with couriers AND in-game map (m key). Diff. setting overrides. Might be something to look on to avoid confusion for next patches.

I just finished a SP divisional LOS battle using only courier commands to the brigades and batteries. I thought it worked very well. I managed to put two brigades, with a battery in support, coming down on the enemy's left flank. I think it would be even cooler in a Strategic Engagement, or whatever you call them now. Definitely emphasizes the historical importance of keeping your lines of communication open, which wasn't the case in TC2M.

I think that there are a lot of commands that work great with the couriers, but some do not. It probably depends on how people play. I know that Larry was testing a bunch of these, making sure that I hooked them all up. I know that Jim's spec was huge, so I'm not sure he got through them all.

But let me make your mouth water just a litte. The courier system is VERY moddable, you can hook up your own commands, and it will work in MP. Meaning if you mod your courier on your system, your new commands and messages will work across the wire to your MP opponents :) So when you code a "DUDE YOUR ROCK!" in your courier file, the mp recipient will receive it!

My only complaint is sometimes the courier pathing is somewhat suspect.

Yes, Guz, you are right, and they do not seem to have an avoidance system. You do have to manuver yourself so that they will take safe roads.

The courier pathing is two fold, first they find the road path, then a direct route, something like that.

What we try to do here is to simulate the communication without making it too gamey. We want the roads to be important, and they are if you want your couriers to go through. I think that a better job could be done in that it always tries for the shortest road route, but it should really try for any OPEN road route. So that if you do hold some path on the map, it should try to take it, even if it's not the shortest.
