Who would have guessed?

Post by 2nd Kentucky »

I was rummaging through old papers at my grandparent's house and my grandma pointed out an old letter she found but couldn't read. I have a copy of that letter now. I am still looking back into my family tree to match up the only two "people" clues that I found which is one of the two brothers and their uncle. Anyways, the first two sentences are what make this find a gem. The recipients of the letter are to the writer's Children;

"The big meeting is over and we shall be starting home in a few days, your father voted for Abraham Lincoln. He is the man whom the republicans will try to make president of the United States."

SO apparently I have a family member who voted for Abraham Lincoln, what a shock for me :woohoo: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

The letter is dated May 19th, 1860. I can only imagine that the "big meeting" would be the Republican Convention in Chicago on May 18th, 1860. What a fine piece of history.

This letter brought my grandparents into a long talk on the other history of our family. My great(x6 or so) owned a huge plantation with over 100 slaves, though all of these were either sold off or set free. I am a little shaky on that information and I will be until I hit the library in their town. But I just wanted to show yal the news of that letter. This has set me back on finding my ancestors.

Indeed, what a treasure! You will most likely find out your ancestors are real people with real lives of their own and that you have many of their traits and personalities in your blood. Sometimes we bark out alot about different issues but inside our souls it feels differnt. When we learn of our ancestors we learn who we really are and what a great feeling that becomes. Keep searching my young friend.
