Random chance for musket smoke?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Random chance for musket smoke?

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

Hi.

Question: Is there a .csv which I can edit that would allow me to set a random chance to have musket smoke to appear, and at what volume?

OR

is this already set in a .csv as misfire?

Gfx.csv – Column D – I think that you can lower the number to reduce the smoke chance, but that is guessing!
and at what volume?
What’s volume mean?

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Hi Garnier.

Volume, I was speaking about the volume of smoke meaning if a rifle successfully fires off a round, the volume of smoke could also be randomized, but I think the game engine won't do that.

Here is another question for you, has anyone created an edit that would mix the rifle smoke with fire when a musket is fired?

I have been looking into it but so far the fire from the musket unfortunately stays for as long as the smoke which of course is totally unrealistic. Any ideas on how I would do this?

Davinci you are totally welcome to weigh in here if you see fit to do so.

As far as I know – a musket flare would have to be added directly into the fire_9 .dds file.

But, the only modder that have ever done anything like that was Tim , with the old game!
If I remember it correctly, he added several different colors to different shoot files to create the flare effect, but that was years ago.

I am curious as to why one would want "random" smoke. Each round contained c. 60 grains of powder which would produce the same volume of smoke for a fired round. What am I missing here?

Thanks

Hi.

I am speaking of a rifle misfiring. A misfire then would produce no smoke. The volume of smoke would be made random (amount of smoke produced) when a rifle successfully fires. No two rifles when fired produce the same amount of smoke, some more some less.

You haven't missed anything, I just never explained it right.

I think it can't be done anyway so there is no point. I am still interested in having the musket flare, but as Davinci mentioned in an earlier post that the only person who actually done this is Tim.

Oh well. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Who knows maybe Norb, and the team have already modded this in the features patch...

Hi Davinci.

Okay...Hmmmm, well who knows maybe Norb, and the dev team have already thought of this. I'll keep my fingers crossed, maybe it's in the features patch.

Cheers, and thanks Davinci!

We looked into this for artillery, where the effect is more flagrant. However it would require running two graphics files for the same event and the game engine does not currently have that ability. It is on a long list of improvements in the 'nice to have' category.

Hi Jim.

Oh, okay I understand, it would be nice to see eventually, and I pretty much understand the game engine would mostly likely have to be upgraded down the road to handle the new, and nifty graphics. If I may, I would like to add to the list a couple of things I personally would like to see (eye candy), and they are...

1. Seeing bullet trails
2. Battlefield Gore
3. Realtime destruction (houses falling apart when hit with cannon), men being mowed down as cannon cannon balls skip across the ground, etc.
4. Being bale to see cannon balls flying through the air.

I know many of the things I have mentioned are present in the Totalwar series, among others.

I understand that could be years from now...

Cheers, and thanks for the reply Jim.
