Sandbox question....

Post by gbs »

I'm trying to set up a Brig. vs Brig balanced battle as the CSA. The union always shows up with cannons and that makes it almost for the rebs to win. Is there any way to do this without Arty so that it will actually be a even fight? Thanks.

A lot of sandbox depends on your OOB. I would suggest trying a different OOB in your experiments and also to select balanced. Although there is no guarantee as to what the computer will pick for the opponent, balanced gives you a chance of getting a more fair fight.

does unchecking 'balanced' always tip the odds in your favour?

I think that unchecking "balanced"means that you will face any enemy unit of the same category( Div v Div or Brig V Brig etc) -- but it might be stronger, weaker or similar. You will need to develop your tactics and approach as the situation becomes clearer to you. I prefer this unknown factor to always knowing in advance that you are facing a balanced battle . (provides more variety of tactics and challenge)
If you select 1 of the first 3 OOBs where each Division has artillery integrated within it you will always get a combined arms and manageable unit. I would suggest that at least initially you select a Confederate Div when attacking- which is usually a more difficult task -and a Union Div when defending. Confederate Divs were usually stronger and more experienced at least initially -but there are several significant exceptions.
Later you will be able to experiment much more widely and with more difficult tasks.
Good Luck
