Greenville, SC - Civil War monuments

Post by Little Powell »

There is a small park in downtown Greenville, SC that is dedicated to the civil war. It's a cool little spot that I just recently discovered. One of the monuments commemorates the "Project Southland" Monument erected on the Gettysburg Battlefield honoring The Kershaw Brigade of South Carolina. There is also a plaque marking the spot of the Confederate armory that produced a carbine that General Wade Hampton pronounced "the best that he had seen".

There are also several more impressive monuments, see below each picture for description:

Here is the Kershaw monument.

This is the impressive 20+ ft tall Greenville County Confederate monument errected in 1892. General Joseph B. Kershaw was the orator at the dedication. The monument was originally located down the street in the middle of an intersection but was moved when cars were invented as it posed a traffic hazard.

So wait, the Kershaw monument is...a monument to another monument? Oh my...

Yeah or something like that.. Either way, it's pretty cool! I had no idea it was there and Kershaw is one of my favorite civil war generals.
