Option Request for Next patch, or Addon ( I would prefer it being a patch, you know what I'm like for freebies) :)

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

Hi.

I have been playing Simcity 4 (got tired of being slaughtered playing the Island War 2011 Mod for OFP2). So here is my request of sorts.

I am looking for an option which would allow a popup warning (just some text) me of a situation which may require my attention, and I can warp there by simply by pressing the TAB key or something along those lines. This way I can always be in touch with what is going on in the battle.

You could make it more realistic by having a courier arrive with a text written message telling me that an objective is about to be over run, and have a goto button at the bottom of the message. It would be cool to have your thoughts on this.

Anyway I best get back to playing Simcity...cheers...

It's a good idea, but it would be very hard to get right. For some there would be too many, other's not enough. It could be a huge mess and would require a ton of options to get it right for everyone.

I hear you. But I've come to think that's part of the realism of the game. Just think what it must have been like to sit there with a pair of field glasses watching the carnage, hoping your plans will work, your men will execute them and knowing all along that, to quote von Moltke the Elder, "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

Wait!, I have to stop right there... Isn't the Internet wonderful? Where else could you quote someone and make it sound like you know something when in fact it's from Wikipedia, one tab over in your browser?

Anyway, no matter how much I find the chaos disconcerting, it's an integral part of the game. You have to admit, if you go back to a turn-based game it seems a little boring.

Exactly. There's always a grey area between realism and enjoyable gameplay. With every design decision we've made with this game, the question is always asked "is this historically accurate?".. It's always top priority with us.. The feeling you get when things are chaotic and you don't really know exactly what's going on is definitely historically accurate...

Hi, I had to ask something- does Union have better chances of winning the single player scenes- I tried for first time- Union - Right time for canister- and it seemed much easier to win than when I play the South side- why is that please? ;) really cool battle- but the Union commander rode right through CSA line and did not get killed- why

I only played the Union side but yes, I found it pretty easy to win. Keep in mind that it's an Artillery scenario, different from the rest.

In my opinion, as someone new to the game and not an expert on the battle, I think it's because the South was always trying to attack difficult defensive positions. From the outset the Union always had the high ground and they always had superior numbers. Look at Longstreet's reservations and Lee's insistence on attacking and you get a sense of the difficulty the South had here. I'm going to stop now because there are many people on this board with incredible knowledge who can explain better than I but that's my take.

Your absolutely right it does add to the chaos on the battlefield, no doubt about it.

I think it's safe to assume that during battles there were subordinates which monitored the progress of the battle from very different perspectives, and couriers would have been sent to tell the commanding officer of impending doom if something wasn't done about it. Just having the option to jump to an area which needs his attention is something that is already built into the code (the ability to jump back, and forth between commanders). The only thing is how do you tag or setup points of interest. You could add a click, and choose the type of reminder such as on the move map ("n" key), click where you wish to have a reminder, then a small window would open up, and you could choose which option you wish to be warned of.

Hmmmm, I just thought of something else, how about being able to choose when to recieve hourly reports (the game time would be say every 15 minutes of real time equals an hour sort of thing) of your men on the field by division (by Brigade is just far too much info)?

Anyway I'll keep pounding out the ideas, maybe something will stick for the next patch or addon.

All in all this game is already a 9 out of 10...well off to edit some oob's, I have a hankering to do some editing.... :)

Cheers...

Your brain energy (the force?) is contagious.

I think this might be done by using the "event" conditionals which are documented in the SDK. I'm not going into it here because it should be a new topic in the Mods section and I promised RebBugler I would maintain "Thread Discipline". But I will explore it some more and post something if you're interested.

Let me know

Just coffee & Smarties (eat the red ones last, if I don't do that it ruins my whole day  )
