Games I am starting to test with Debian/Wine

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

Games I am starting to test with Debian/Wine

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

Well it's been a long road testing out the Linux OS, and I am coming to love it, and really hate it. It's the most temperamental piece of software I ever had the displeasure/pleasure of working with. Anyway I will be posting a few games every once in awhile to let those who might be interested in one day trying out Debian.

[Game List]

1: SOWgb installs great, patches install nicely. Unfortunately the graphics are not good at all, but that doesn't mean I won't keep trying to fix it. I also know that wine can access the internet so I will be testing it some more to see how I might be able to register the game.

2: TC2M installs nicely, patches install alright, but is a bit more cumbersome since it will not install the desktop icon sometimes can be a real pain. You have to rename the movies folder to something else because the game won't start. Also you will not get any sound while playing the game. I have played TC2M with all the different settings imaginable, and nothing. Maybe someone out there who knows more about Wine can give me a heads up. (I installed Windows Media player, and Windows encoder, and these didn't make a difference).

3: Sid Meier's Gettysburg will install very nicely, and is playable. Install the WinXP patch as normal using wine. The unfortunate part is the desktop icon will not work, you will have to use nautlius or Gnome Commander or something of the like, wander over to the installed directory, and play it under wine that way. You will not be able to play in full screen mode, but you can play it.

4: Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe installs very well. In the settings make sure that you add the exe to the Wine's setup list of programs, and make sure that you set your audio settings both to emulation, otherwise you will not get any sound.

5: Day of Defeat installs fantastic, and plays like a charm.

6: Max Payne installs well, and the patches install correctly. This game plays perfect with all settings maxed to the limit. When you try to install the game, it will tell you that you do not have enough memory, just ignore the warning, and continue on with the install.

7: Mech Commander Gold will NOT work properly. It will crash when trying to play the campaign. The sound will work, then it won't. If anyone here wants me to continue on try this game out let me know.

8: M1 Tank Platoon 2 will not work period.

I know why try these old games first? Well it's pretty simple, I wanted to test Wine going from the lowest, then gradually climb to the highest. I will eventually try Arma2, and other games that I have which are pretty demanding.

If any of you wish for me to test out a game, post it, and I will see if I own the game, if I happen to own it I will give it a try.

:)

Well the final results are in...

It's unfortunate that Linux just can't compete with Windows 7. There are just too many differneces between the two OS's which I just don't have the time to get into, and to tell you the truth I don't even want to bother, I have wasted enough time on the Linux software too say it's not for me, and it will never take the place of Windows.

I know there are many people who use Linux based OS's thinks it the cats arse, and for some things sure of course it is, and I will never bad mouth Linux, It certainly has it's strong points but it just won't come close to what Windows offers... The ease, and availability of software, and Hardware compatibility (driver base) is simply is outstanding for Windows, as for Linux, well you may or may not have the access to the proper drivers, or you simply have to purchase it which brings me to mention that sure I have an internal modem, and I have found the proper driver for it, but I need to pay a hefty $20.00 dollars (not including exchange rate, and taxes) to have a full working copy of the driver. For Windows it's never been a problem to download all the proper drivers for any piece of hardware I own, and not have to pay a penny for it.

Now for Wine...It's an ingenious piece of software, not bad really but don't kid yourself into thinking that it will install, and play all games, and software which works flawless in the Windows environment because it just won't happen.

I have installed several pieces of software which is made for Windows 95 in Wine, and they just won't work at all no matter how much tweaking I do. So I thought hey why not install the exact same pieces of software in Windows 7. I installed all the Win95 games, and they worked extremely well, I didn't encounter one bump in the road in installation, and in game play.

Now since I own well over 3000 DOS games I decided to install D-fend Reloaded in Wine which did install without any problems. I transferred my DOS games from my D-fend Reloaded Windows 7 install. Now when I tried to play some of the games in the Wine installed Defend Reloaded version I encountered a real slow down in a majority of my dos collection....so Wine failed in this regard.

I'm just not going to blather on, there are just too many differences between Linux, and Windows which has made me wipe Linux off of my computer because Linux offers me nothing I was hoping for.

I love Windows 7, it's a tight, and very well designed piece of software. Mind you it does have it's very small inconveniences, but nothing which compares to what I have come across in Linux...

So any new news on the front that I know I have missed???? It feels like I have been away for a month.
