Christmas comes early for Sarge

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

Christmas comes early for Sarge

Post by JC Edwards »

Hey gang!

Just wanted to show off my new "friends". My lady Lisa and I went for Thanksgiving dinner at her nephew's home and he told us about a box van that he had purchased with contents unseen.
Turns out out it was filled with all kinds of goodies including knives........and an assortment of Black Powder weapons.:cheer:

So my lady, knowing my love and interest in owning a Black Powder rifle purchased 2 of them from her nephew for me as early Christmas presents.:woohoo:
I know they are nothing real fancy like Springfield's or Enfield's, they do need some TLC, but I will alway's cherish these gifts from her.

For me the Hawken was a real sweet find. Ever since I was about 8 years old and I saw the movie "Jeremiah Johnson" I had always wanted a .50 Cal Hawken......and after more than 30 years, my wish came true.:)

Not too shabby Sarge, if PC was around, I'm sure he would be all over you for details.

JC, welcome to the Black Powder Club. ;)

At least one of those smoke poles looks like it could be an original, hard to tell from those pics. Before even considering loading them, have them checked out by a gunsmith first to see if they're even fireable....most neglected originals aren't! Make sure the Smith checks the barrels for rust pits, bulges, cracks and also the nipple and trigger mechanism - VERY IMPORTANT - it shouldn't cost that much!
Or maybe you just want em as wallhangers?

If they are fireable and you do have any questions regarding loading those rifles or Black Powder in general don't hesitate to ask...i've fired probably over 10,000 round balls and .45 cal lead slugs from my smoke poles and Sharps rifles over the years.

Thank you ironsight, I really appreciate it.:) I will more than likely take you up on your offer.;)

Yes, I had planned on getting them checked out first ( I really hope I can use both of them ). There's is some rusting on the Hawken ( I think somebody refinished it not too long ago......very glossy and I want to get rid of that as well )the outside of the barrel is patched with rust....but not real bad. It is missing the locking pin? for the grip/barrel.....are those easy to replace? I also need to find a powder/ball loader for it. Also, the locking trigger is workable but a little wobbly.

The CVA is in pretty fine condition.....especially the finish.

The nipple/trigger mechanisms's for both rifles look to be in very good condition as well.

I'll be sure to give updates as the restoring progresses when I can get started.:)
