Three times not a charm

Post by Element UK »

"Not a charm"! your not kidding lol.

It would seem to me that this is the first real scenario where a fuller understanding of the game mechanics really pay off. My first attempt got me a 3600 pnt defeat.

I might be taking charge of to many brigades? Pender, Archer, McCowan and a couple of others I think. Also all of the arty you get at the start. Do we have to learn to have more faith in the AI and simply give the commander an 'order-type'?

Not performed any courier stuff yet as I'm not sure when this becomes useful to know about.

I start to lose sight of main objectives as I still have difficulty spotting them. They're clear at the start with the two in the distance. And what about the 'holding the position to get more points as time goes by thing?

Gen Early will just sit there back on the left it seems until you order him. Is that best done by courier or TC orders?

Ordinance Supply Wagon: Is this best left to AI as it may 'feel' when units are running out? or direct TC order? Also why do units once re-supplied, start moving from their current position? I have to re-order them to stay put or move into my preferred position.

I'm loving this game so far and I'm getting a strong feeling that the more you know about it the richer the experience. It is a deep learning curve but one I'm willing to go through as a well-supported game such as this is a rare thing these days where profit and time equations rule the coporate gaming world.
Shogun2 is a big one for that as Creative Assembly seem to totally ignore even their own specific forum.

It's also a very rare thing these days to be able to write in a game forum and get a response from the Dev/s (Norb) and alot of people rarely appreciate it. Only such direct contact with the game designer can make it into what players need.

Thanks Norb for being so on-hand! A big hoorah and a waving of hats parade for you!

Also feel like I'm ready to try my hand at MP soon, but feel I should learn the courier system or can someone get away without it especially if in audio/headphone contact? Or is there a simpler text player option?

Cheers guys for all your help. In my experience at helping other noobies, it only serves to expand the arena and fill-out the gaps epsecially when it can be hard to find MP gamers.

That is one of my favorite stock scenarios. It gives the player a very good feel for what corps command is really about. It is also a great scenario for learning how to command from the saddle using couriers. In fact it is the only one that is easily beatable in that mode. In this scenario you have massive resources. Use them. Take Blocher's Knoll as fast as possible. Use overwhelming force. TC your brigades to get them into the right location and then un-TC them and let the do their thing. They won't disappoint. Once the knoll has been overrun, get Jackson up there as quick as possible so you can start collecting the points. That's about the only thing corps commanders are good for. :) It's also a fine point from which to control the battle when playing HITS(hint). TC a worn down regiment to stay with him so you always meet the requirement of the objective. It's a silly requirement but a necessary one. Push your divisions forward and attack the enemy. After all, you're Jackson, it's what he would do. Again you may need to TC some of the brigades to move them in the proper position, but once they are there, they can do the job without your meddling. Advance your artillery too and support your infantry. You should not need to go after the objective on Cemetery Hill unless you want extra credit. Aggressiveness is key, and you've got a great corps for that. Good luck.

I have learned letting my Commanders do their thing the hard way as well. I always thought I had to micro manage to win, and normally I lost every time. Now I TC my officers to set them up where I would like them hold, then once the battle begins I will un-tc them one at a time when I need them to get into the fray, and trust in them to do their jobs.

It does make life more easier.
