Don't you think it would be odd if enemies were 3 paces apart shooting. We set the default distance at 25 yards to prevent this, cavalry is 125. These are flag distances so ends of units get much closer, but if they bump, charge must happen or it would look dumb with enemies overlapping or touching, and just firing.

That's a good question, hope I explained the rationally. It may not be perfect, but it's the best compromise we've come up with that fits this battle engine...after months of testing and years of feedback.

Because sometimes, Will, troops get their dander up.

Well, for mine, they autocharge at 40 yds sometimes, although I do not know if this is due to terrain or anything like that.

I've put my hand up before and voted for an auto-AVOID rule where troops that get too close fall back to about 30-40 yards apart and start shooting. I think that would give a far more ACW-y game than all these yellin' mobs runnin' around every battle!

Autocharge has always been around, sometimes from more than a hundred yards. But when we (the GCM players) were having problems with a certain player running column formations through enemy lines (directly through multiple regiments in line), we asked NSD for a solution, and autocharge at close ranges was their answer.

Personally, I don't have much of a problem with it; I agree with RebBugler's answer. Just don't get too close. As for regiments getting their dander up and charging on their own from 50 to 200 yards away, well. . . that's always been in the game. If you TC them and give them a move order, they will usually stop. Sometimes though you have to do it a couple of times to calm them down.
