PC Build

Here you can talk about whatever floats your boat. Your favorite movie, sports team, etc. If it's a little racey, I suggest you post in R&R, otherwise we'll move it for you.

PC Build

Post by montecristo1981 »

I would like to build a new PC.

My current one is 2007, plus a GPU replacement in 2011.

Can anyone recommend a PC build that plays SOWGB at max?

And future proof of course :)

I built my first PC in 2007 too - it is standing up pretty well still.

What do you have now, and how much money do you intend to spend?

Also, SOWGB at "max" is totally undefined.

You can turn up all the in game settings, but then play a small battle on the kansas map, which some might call max, or you can get a big monitor (2560x1600 pixels) turn antialiasing up, turn down the in game settings, but play on a map with trees, and you'll need more graphics card for that.

Or you can leave all settings on minimum but play a big enough battle with AI and your graphics card won't matter, but it will lag horribly because your processor won't keep up.

No one can give you a computer that will run SOW in any setup and never get a bad framerate. But a good enough computer now will run most typical situations just fine. And basically the better your computer is, the bigger battles/higher settings you'll be able to run smoothly.

hi - budget about $1500

rite now i hav

E6600 2.4Ghz - not ovrclocked

GTX 460 1Gb

4b ram - not sure what speed.

monitor is 1680 x 1050 - im more than happy with that.

ive nvr touched AA.

I'd luv 2 play a SOW army sandbox, 2000 visibility for Objects, Trees and Units.

I'd love to play a division size single player scenario with minimum graphic settings and get something better than 6 FPS. I have a Gateway NV53 laptop. I don't have the exact specs in front of me cause I'm on the work computer.

$1500 will allow you to build a top of the line computer. An Intel 3770K CPU with an Asus Mobo and a Radeon 7950 graphics card would allow you to play some very large battles. Have fun building.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Hi Kasychb,

6 FPS is pretty low for a division size battle...

1. Try lowering percentage trees - i usually play around 50 - 70%

2. Try lowering your visibility distances, particularly vegetation...

3. After that increase the sprite ratio (so one sprite represents more troops).

4. Lower uniform quality (this doesnt have as big an effect since the 1.4 patch when the unit sprite got improved)

5. Turn off 'off map' terrain and trees.

I have the following.

i5 2400 cpu $180
MSI MOBO with a LGA 1155 socket or whatever ivy and sandy use $130
GTX 550 ti 1GB $150
16GB Corsair 1600 mhz RAM $70

I get about 20fps in the full army 11 hour antietam scenario with most settings maxed and well into the battle it still holds strong.

If you already have a monitor and speakers that's very solid build for only $530.

Add more $ for extra like monitors and speakers and os. I spent about $700 total last fall when I built my rig but I got a 20 inch 1600x900 monitor for free through work so it was more like a $850 build. You could certainly get a better build but this runs everything i do very well.
