150th Anniversary of The Battle of South Mountain

150 years ago today, the stage was being set for the hard fought battle of South Mountain.

Shortly after Lee launched his Maryland campaign of 1862, McClellan’s Army of The Potomac cautiously pursued him. When McClellan’s Army was encamped in Frederick MD on Sept. 13th, Union soldiers discovered order 191, a detailed campaign plan outlining the movements of Lee’s forces. This document held the key to completely destroy Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, yet the timid McClellan acted slowly and did not fully take advantage of it.

However on Sept 14th, he did manage to surprise a portion of Lee’s army guarding the South Mountain gaps, where he achieved a decisive victory. McClellan did not capitalize on his success and instead of pursuing Lee’s forces over the mountain; he halted allowing Lee’s army to consolidate on the high ground west of the Antietam creek.

If you haven't picked up the Antietam expansion yet, you are really missing out. It includes the full battle of South Mountain with 8 scenarios re-creating every engagement of the battle from the action at Fox's and Turner's Gap, to Crampton's Gap.

I was up at Fox's gap this weekend for a monument dedication and I can't say how awesome it is to be up there after seeing how it looked in 1862 thanks to your detailed maps. Incidentally, while cutting a monument trail at Fox's gap over the summer we stumbled upon the old wall marking the edge of Wise's cornfield. All evidence of the wall and cornfield is nearly gone, other than the fact that the ground suddenly goes from having no stones to being very stony in an unnaturally straight line, but it was very easy to confirm the location using the game map (as well as the historical references you all used!).

Also, the Turner's Gap dusk battle for Confederates is a personal favorite of mine. The way the Federals (as well as nightfall!) hems you in as the scenario clock runs down is awesome!

The two 'Gaps' maps lead to some incredibly confused battles. Leave the foilage turned on and it is quite a challenge to fight on the mountain. They are favorites of the Hits & Couriers group.

Finally, a positive plug for that scenario, took me weeks of design and testing to make that scenario finally work...now the payoff, after over a year, but it's worth it, the wait enhanced the pride...Thanks

If I remember right, only Sarge could master it. Without this, I would have been forced to simplify it, there was much pressure from other team members for me to rewrite it, and make it easier.

Haaaa, JC is one person I wouldn't want to play against, he scares the crap out of me. :blink:

Has anyone else seen his score sheet, really something to read.

What would really be an interesting game I would pay to watch live is JC in charge of an Army, and have 4 others take him on. Now that would be something to watch.

He is not an Enigma but is THE Enigma. The only thing I know about JC is he works his tail end off driving a truck, and has a temper that no one wants to stoke (same goes for Rebbugler). Scarey stuff.

I wouldn't expect JC to give up his secrets, besides even if we did have them, it's take more than knowledge to win a battle, and it's obvious he's a natural.
