Re: Windows 8 Discussion
As I have mentioned in an earlier post about X-Fire being a bit buggy concerning games not being launched properly, or not all all. To fix the launch problems with some games via X-Fire, run X-Fire as Admin if using Windows 7 or 8 this should fix the some launches issues you may be experiencing.
Enjoy the wonderful world of Windows 8, and X-Fire.

This is another damned thing I hate about windows. With the initial setup procedure, when you opt for single user, no password, you should not have to see the word administrator or administrator permission crap ever again. As I have mentioned in an earlier post about X-Fire being a bit buggy concerning games not being launched properly, or not all all. Haaaaa. I think you know the reason for why MS adopted that strategy. You can overcome it if you wish in your settings. I won't tell ya how to do it because I don't want to be held responsible for any damages...This is another damned thing I hate about windows. If any of you who are using Steam, and happen to be using Windows 8, launch steam with Admin rights, and see what happens.... This could heal launch issues. If not you could go a step further, and add the executable of the game with Admin rights as well as Steam itself. Most times this does heal issues.
Also in Windows 8, if you do set programs to run with Admin rights, you will at times be asked by Windows 8 if the program ran properly. Select "YES" to keep the settings (admin settings). If you select "NO" you will be taken to the Compatibility launcher which will then ask you to test the software. Once you select test software, Windows 8 will launch the software again, use the software as normal, and when you leave the software Windows 8 will determine the best settings for you to use, and save what Windows 8 determines what is best to run the software next time you use it.
To keep the settings you manually entered, select YES.

Yeah, I know. But the whole concept is confusing and sounds arrogant for my old mind. I liked the Mac approach...BEWARE of these files lest you screw up your system. Simple, effective and blunt by not establishing computer role playing. With Windows, the administrator is supposedly the smart guy, whereas you the consumer or user, are the dumb-ass randomly pushing buttons to see what happens. :SHaaaaa. Guess I'll be forever biased, I'm of the generation that saw the emergence of Wind-Doze, and Mac shoved to second place, never to recover their strength in the PC world.

I understand. We all have a like's, and dislikes. I bet there are still people who still are put off when VHS pulled a Microsoft, and killed off the Betamax. Betamax was a superior machine, but VHS flooded the market, and made sure that they put a machine in every home.Yeah, I know. But the whole concept is confusing and sounds arrogant for my old mind. I used a MAC for about two months, and I liked it, it's just too expensive, and there are more programs for the PC than there are for the Mac at the moment. If more developers start producing games for the MAC as of now, in a year or two I bet they will be giving the PC a run for their money as a game platform.

Actually I am very concerned regarding the closing up of a once open PC system (see above link for more detail). I think the introduction of Windows 8 is a very ominous sign for those who want an open PC system and the innovation that it brings. This very well could lead to the elimination of small independent developers and for games like SoW in the future.
Perhaps the time for Linux as a wide spread OS may truly be coming. The only way I could see that working would be for developers to come together and finance some type of common open Linux OS, but that seems unlikely. Perhaps Google could create and establish an open OS computer system, like they have for smartphones and tablets?
Regards,

Re: Windows 8 Discussion
If there is one group that could push a 3rd OS into relevancy it would be Android. If Windows becomes to closed a market may well develop for Google to offer a more robust Android OS for standard CPU use.
If there is one positive it's that while Windows is closing down, Android is flourishing as an open source and open OS. It might not have the sales figures for applications that Apple does but its a completely open OS with 51% market share in it's field, that is something encouraging.

Re: Windows 8 Discussion
I was playing Scourge of War, and the answer to what everyone has been asking popped into my head, and musing over is that you will be forced to only purchase games from the MS store.
NO, you will not be forced to purchase only from the Apps store for the PC. As far as tablets are concerned, that would like any other tablet out there running another operating system, meaning the apps that are listed at the apps store on your tablet can only be played on the tablet, nothing is transferable. I don't see anyone else out there moaning about installing apps on other os's out for the tablet, and crying about a close system. If Microsoft wishes for you to buy from their store only for the tablet, that is their, and your choices to make. If you don't like it, then go buy a tablet which has another OS installed, and stop crying about how the world is coming to the end.
As far as the PC, if you purchase an app from the MS store, it is immediately downloaded, and installed, and you play it from there. You still have the option to log online to live, or not, it will not affect the way the game is to be played.
I know people will be asking "well I have bought a game from Matrix, can I install it"? YES you can! Download the game from Matrix, and Install it...play it as usual.
SO YES, you install the games as you normally do now. You buy a digital copy of SOW, then all you do is pay the man for his hard work, download, and install it. There will be NO NEED to login to Microsoft live, and play the game.
"Can I install a game I bought from my game store down the road"? YES YOU CAN. Place the game DVD into your CDROM, install the game, and play the game as usual.
From the way people are talking is that you will have to take your CDROM, though it away because you can only now buy, and install games from the MS store...etc, etc...
Does anyone else see how stupid this whole conversation is over having the Microsoft store, and the fear mongering going on about it? It's all about the store, nothing to do about how great the OS is, it's about the store....
It's a whole lot of nonsense this BS talk. I'm finding this talk about how Microsoft will force people to stop buying from other digital vendors, and how Microsoft will stop you from playing games you have on a DVD... Think about it folks for a minute. Please tell me you are not thinking that every game you own can no longer be played because it wasn't bought from the MS store. If you seriously think that, I have a few bridges to nowhere to sell you at a very decent price.
