Released - Random Maps 4

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Two friends and I play 4-5 times per week, but often we only have time for 60 minute games. That's when we use the smaller maps....time for some maneuver and then right into combat. When we have time we play on the 5x5 maps, but work and family commitments preclude those save for one every week or so.

That's why we really like to MP on the smaller maps.

Now, for the times I happen to play solitaire I use the 5x5 maps and speed up movement.

So bring on some smaller maps! :)

Oh.. I forgot that with sandbox you don't get to pick how close you start to the enemy. In GCM it's pretty much like sandbox but with far more options including better control of how the starting positions are randomized. So when we play the large maps we just use a portion of it, but have the rest available for flanking so fighting isn't near the edge of the map.

You don't have to play with the carryover OOBs in GCM either, there are options to use historical OOBs or one-time random OOBs.

But, if you must play sandbox, I am sorry. :)

Did you try the Line-of-sight option in sandbox on a 5x5 map?

Line of sight is just not as much fun, but I'm intrigued by the GCM. I haven't looked into it, but I believe I will now. I would really like the ability to start closer to the enemy on the 5x5 maps. Thanks.

Here's an example battle that was just fought:

I think the scenarios are more interesting than sandbox since everything is more unpredictable.

Hi Garnier

I am still intrigued by the thought of GCM despite my recent crash problems.

GCM tells me I must have .Net Framework v 4.0.30319

I have tried the Microsoft download centre which offers a whole range of .NET Framework v.4.0 variants (I am currently using .NET Framework 3.5 on XP) None however mention .30319.

I chose and downloaded what I thought might be the correct version only to have the crash on trying to install.

Any suggestions or advice of a source for the correct version ? Living with the Zimbabwean power system, I have set up my computer to be able to deal routinely with crashes but it is not my favourite pastime.

It just requires .NET 4.0.

I don't know what exactly crashed. But if .NET 4 crashes while installing, that's something I have no experience troubleshooting -- I've never seen it not install correctly yet.

When creating a battle in the GCM, you get the option to choose/make a block on the map in which the armies will deploy and all the objectives will appear.

Sounds like just what you are looking for.

Thanks Garnier again

I guess the problem must lie with my WINDOWS INSTALLER. I have had nothing but trouble with the whole family of .NET FRAMEWORKS.

The first time trying to load .NET FRAMEWORK 4.0 WINDOWS crashed completely, the second time of trying it just stopped in mid-install.

I'll try to sort this when I have some time.

Best regards,

G,

Outstanding maps, Brother! Am having a total hoot on them. Battles seem different, (re: better), for some reason. Thanks!

G,

Have now played a large number of battles on the new maps, both Nap Mod and ,yes, ACW (LOL!). Anyway, question - I seem to be getting most of the objectives showing up in the upper left quarter of each map. Is this normal or is something else going on here? Just thought I'd ask.
