Hi Everyone
I have been addicted to SOW for quite some time and learning new things all the time but I need help with artillery, especially plotting fire of bombardment.
This is what I want to do...set artillery battery to bombard an open field, road, house etc. Is this possible? Lets say you just want to practice with a battery can you do it?
I get the yellow marker but doesn't seem to work.
Any help appreciated
Artillery Bombardment
Re: Artillery Bombardment
Artillery bombardments were not a tactic used in the Civil War since all artillery firing was of a direct fire nature. It wasn't until improvements in battlefield communications developed that indirect fire was possible due to the possibility to call for shot correction. World War I was probably the first real use of artillery bombardments. Artillery bombardments aren't possible with the SOW engine and I seriously doubt that it can be modded.Hi Everyone

War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.

Re: Artillery Bombardment
Thanks for all the info. I know about direct and indirect but thought perhaps you could. I just thought it would be rather neat but as you said this fact only adds to the realism anyway.

Dg,
Shirkon is right but wrong, too. You CAN direct your batteries on specific targets, ala the Federal Batteries at Antietam. There, the Federal reserve Guns targeted individual Rebel Batteries one by one and sytematically put them out of action. YOU can do it but it takes some time, taking each of your batteries, clicking on the "Target this unit" yellow marker and clicking it on the unit you wish to target. Takes some practice, but it can be done. It is along the lines of "Counter Battery fire" against Guns or just "Tracking Fire" against Infantry or Cavalry. Your Guns will continue to fire on the target until it moves away or is destroyed. Good Luck!

I'm not wrong in the context of his question. He specifically stated targeting an open field, a road or a house. Those can not be targeted in any way. The instances you use are not bombardments, they are targeted firing. What he's looking for is more of an area fire versus targeted fire.Dg,
