Bugles & Flags XIX

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

RB,

When I was in the 47th. Virginia Regiment, our Regimental Color had actually faded to a reddish-pink. Wish I had a decent picture of it. The website doesn't, unfortunately.

A heads up to the Nap enthusiasts about promised flags, this is what's keeping me busy now, want to get it completed by the Gettysburg 150th Anniversary. Almost 100 flags being rebuilt or built in the Bugles and Flags workshop. In the examples below you can see some toning down, de-saturation with the bunting issues. Not all will be de-saturated, leaving room for variety. Also the highlight, selection look will be different.

Great work, RebBugler. Just right IMHO

It would be an honour to defend these flags in any re-fight on or near the Anniversary.

Looking forward to seeing the extra movement you have incorporated.

Thank you

Reb WOW, very realistic!

Your work just keeps getting better!

As you already know, my only complaint is that dreaded yellow\gold hi-lighted border that the default flags started.

Good work. Color is much better for that period. I am also looking forward to the increased wave. Once you finish with that minor ACW skirmish, back to the important business of adding flags to real armies. Can you add the improved wave to the nappy flags you already created?
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Looking like some nice improvements randy ! The color tones look really nice! I look forward to seeing the new motion :) Once I finish up some work I had been promising in TC2m, I will take a stab at adding some flags and other stuff myself :)

RB - looking at your shadow and wave methods and the frames you use, please have a look at Gunships Napoleonic flags. I find his Spanish one to be especially effective. See how the wave motion passes across the flag texture so that the flag seems to be made of very light material and rippling? Your recent Napoleonic flags have great solid and clear textures but their motion and wave style is not in the same league as Gunships.

I hate being blunt about these subjects and have no wish to offend, its also hard to describe these things without sounding like I'm saying there's a right and wrong way.

I know every modder has their preferred methods but when two so different animations are used in the same army it looks odd. No idea if you can even get what I'm saying as I'm probably not explaining it too well but if you could see what Gunship did and use a style more like that (and more like the default flags) I think it would be better for everyone since your flags would merge better with the vanilla flags and Gunships.

Hope I've not annoyed you and please carry on with your great work.

Appreciate the kudos! Nice that you're helping out TC2M, bunch of loyal fans over there. For me it has always been a fun game, but after modding SOW I find it impossible now to abide by the TC2M modding format, it just feels ancient. Still, TC2M keeps on a truckin, with loads of maps and enthusiastic folks.

Saddletank will love your style of flags, hope you can appease him some after your TC2M donations.

The only thing that rubs me wrong with this message is that you asked me to look at Gunship's flags...a big DUH!!! So you think I just hide behind my designs and deny other folks works?

I used to design along those one dimensional schemes years ago...multiple waves with no motion. This design is typical of most 2D flag designs across multiple games, they're fast and look good to most folks, you, for sure. Gunships are very good, and Scott is producing some of the best I've seen.

Striving to break out of that box, I've evolved my designs to what you see now. They're not perfect, and not universally accepted, but they're my ideas and unique, and I'm always working to make them better. I won't go back to the wave only techniques, they're just too static in my eye.

As far as mixing flag looks in OOBs I don't think it's that big a deal, otherwise I would not have encroached on other folks mods, suggesting the use of my flags. My intention was never to monopolize, just add variety.

Still, I thank you, you definitely have a way of keeping folks egos at bay and keeping them on their toes seeking improvements. I understand exactly where you're coming from, the best band directors I knew were the one's that scoffed at praise before competition, they demanded to know what sounded bad, and when they asked for comments, you'd better be critical, or lose respect fast within that field.

BTW, I call my added technique, Swing...And,

It Don't Mean a Thing, if it Ain't Got SWING
