Why Waterloo?

Post by Bloody Bill »

I was just wondering if there was a reason for picking this battle. The Napoleonic wars are full of wonderful battles to be fought from Marengo to Leipzig. Waterloo is a very played out battle within the Napoleonic gaming community so I was just curious.

Will Waterloo bring any new graphic updates possibly 3d models instead of the sprites? Will it be on the same SOW engine?

I hope you don't mind if I chip in with some unofficial thoughts.

Bill - quick question and please forgive me for asking - are you the same Bloody Bill of the Lordz?

Waterloo was chosen because 2015 is the 200th anniversary. NSD set themselves the deadline to produce the new game in 18 months. Its also the one battle almost everyone knows from the period, like Gettysburg is the one ACW battle most non-Americans know from that conflict, so from a sales POV it makes sense to develop a well-known subject. Its the reason why Gettysburg has been reproduced in wargame form (paper and digital) more than any other ACW battle. Outside of grognard circles far fewer people have heard of Marengo or Leipzig. Probably Borodino is the second most well known Napoleonic battle to the man in the street. I think very few could name a third one.

The Waterloo campaign was also of very short duration and both sides had limited strategic aims, it also occupied a very small area. I understand NSD are looking at creating a campaign engine to go with v2 of SoW and so Waterloo provides a good, limited 'small' environment to try out those ideas. Its not that big a battle either, compared to some Napoleonic battles.

Lastly I think apart from Borodino or Leipzig it also gives the maximum concentration of different uniforms as well. We effectively get three of the six major nations uniforms provided in one game, (albeit the later style ones) plus a host of interesting minor nations as well.

NSD are going to stay with 2D sprites because they want the entire battle to be playable on one 5 mile map. At a ratio of 1 sprite:4 men this means 50,000 sprites. You just can't do that with 3D models, no home computer could handle it.

Thanks for the response gents. I was just curious. I am very excited for the game as I love SOW I need to play more mp just have not had the time.

-Yes, Saddletank I am the same Bill from the Lordz. I helped mod the NTW3 mod with the other Lordz.

I agree that Waterloo is a very famous and known battle and will have a lot of draw to it. I have a lot of love for the horse and musket era and would love all the different options possible. Civil war and Napoleonic the more the better.
