Dettingen 1743 OOBs for Fontenoy Mod

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Dettingen 1743 OOBs for Fontenoy Mod

Post by Jack ONeill »

All,

After a long hiatus, I have done up 2 different OOBs for Pom's excellent Fontenoy Mod. I've done two because there is no definitive OOB out there for the battle. The Pragmatic (or Allied) side is fairly consistent, but the French are not.

Dettingen_A is based on Nafziger's CARL OOB, which purports to show the French on the field(s) of Battle on the Day.

Dettingen_B is from Alesillo's TC2M Frederick the Great Mod, which I believe shows most, if not all, the French troops in the immediate area. Dettingen_B has been cut down a bit in order that the Allies not be too badly outnumbered.

Apparently, there were roughly 60,000 French troops in the area at the time. The French commander, Noailles, had some 45,000 on the field of which some 26,000 were engaged. This was mostly due to Blockheaded French lower commanders, who decided to attack because they were bored with waiting for their Flanking Column to arrive. BTW, the Allies won this one.

Not all the Flags are correct for the French. Pom did the flags for the French units at Fontenoy, and there were some different units at Dettingen. I plead artistic license here. I like color on my 18th Century Battlefields. Also, my numbers are a bit high. Not sure why. The units are correct. Another thing - I removed the Colonel's (white on white) flag from most French regiments. This helped the FPS somewhat. Units with just a Colonel's flag are generally the "Vieux" or "Petit Vieux" Regiments of the French Army and I couldn't see replacing them with the wrong ones. Some of them are just because I ran out of different flags in the gfx.csv file.

So there you go. Something else to play with. Enjoy or fuss.

Thanks for this Jack,I was going to do Dettingen but couldn't find an order of battle worth the name, now I can be the last King of England to lead an army into battle.

I'll give this a run at the weekend.

All,

Some further information I forgot to list in the above post.

I should have said ALL Battalions/Regiments have just one flag now. British have the Kings color only. Hanoverian and Austrian units have their Regimental colors as there really isn't a "Kings" color for them.

There were no Austrian sprites available so I used French Foot for them. Austrians wore White at this time, same as the French, only they had black gaiters. Oh well.

I left the Battery Commanders names from Fontenoy the same. No reason to change them.

I have just realized I need to edit the Allied Cavalry units sizes. I will either re-post the OOBs OR post the units in question information and y'all can edit them yourself if you want.

All,

Okay, since I can't figure out how to delete the .csv file from the first post, here is the Dettingen_A OOB with the revised numbers for the English/Allied Horse.

All,

So, since I can't leave anything alone - Here are two edited Fontenoy OOBs.

Fontenoy_A Has edited Flags - Pragmatic (Allied) Army Battalions have National, (more or less), Flags only and the French Battalions have their Regimental Colors only.

Fontenoy_B has edited flags - Pragmatic (Allied) Army Battalions have Regimental colors only and the French Battalions have Regimental Colors only like Fontenoy_A.

Enjoy or not.

Minor editing - Missed a couple of National/Colonels colors with the French. Fixed now and reposted.

More minor editing - Minor glitch fixed in Fontenoy_B.

(Sigh) MORE editing.....

Even more minor editing....

Still more minor editing....

Great work on this everyone. Unfortunately after all the fun and games I had getting this mod to run I can't play it as the graphics load is just too high from those pretty sprites. The game slows to a stop once any amount of fighting starts. I can play div vs div battles but nothing bigger.

Note to self - upgrade puter.
HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.

Tank,

If you'd like, I can edit up an OOB to run with the "Low" settings in the game. Something like all English Battalions with Blue cuffs, All French with Blue cuffs, etc. Might make a difference. Let me know.
I'm currently running on the low settings right now and may do it for myself anyway.
