Anyone ever toyed with creating a "3 sided Mod" ?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Anyone ever toyed with creating a "3 sided Mod" ?

Post by JohnVW »

meaning, 3 players/factions/armies/nations/tribes all playing against each other (everyone would be 1 vs 2)...

- if using Amer Civil War maybe add Mexico?
- if using Amer Rev War maybe add France? (not as an ally, but as the 3rd nation at war)
- my dream mod would be a French & Indian War mod, with the Indians being their own entity

we have a steady group of 3 players, and always end up us 3 vs the AI, or 2 vs 1...but we'd love any mod, from any period, where we could all play together BUT against each other...

anyone ever see anything like that posted here? even mentioned here? thanks!

In all the years that I have been with TCBR, TC2M and SOWG, John, I have never seen a mutually hostile triangular contest proposed.

Has this ever happened in history on a large scale ? I guess though we are not far away from it today in Syria and Iraq, where at least three entities are currently not quite sure who the actual prime enemy ought to be.

I guess it would be a pretty major change with the need to add a third colour of unit icons and determining what the AI strategy would be. It struggles a bit with two at the moment.

The current maps would have major constraints containing three armies without continual overlap and the increased load on processing and RAM capacity would probably have to wait for the next generation of computers.

Strangely enough I have often thought about the same thing for Soccer. Three teams, three goals on a hexagonal pitch. We can only dream.

If we are indulging in fantasy, allow me to stray slightly from the topic. Has anyone ever considered setting up cross-era battles ? I would love to know how Robert E Lee would fare against Napoleon or General Grant against Wellington, or Marlborough against Suverov.

It would probably be resolved ultimately by a comparison of the strengths and ranges of the various opposing weapons ..... and would likely need some manipulation of the unit strengths.

How about an ability to set up and store single sided OOB's in SOW Waterloo which could be chosen individually, designated as prime, enemy or allied, and then combined by the game into the sandbox battle full OOB. This ought to be not-too-difficult programming-wise, manipulating spreadsheets.

Benefit would accrue with time of, of course, as the equivalent of the SOWG mods have inevitably ported across to SOWW and increased the range of potential combatants. Sandbox game perhaps with combined Union and Rebel elements against combined Wellington and Grand Armee elements.

On the bizarre side, you could even have Generals Grant and Joe Hooker settling an argument over cards by bringing their respective commands onto the field and slugging it out. Not historical certainly ... but a lot of potential fun. You could even fight yourself, that flexible !!

I might be wrong on this considering that it has been years since this was brought up, but I think that the game is programmed to allow for three armies.

The downside is that two of the three armies are allies, so they can’t fire on each-other.

There is nothing in the code to allow for three-armies-fighting-each-other that I have ever heard of.

So, basically you would have two against one.

I think that the OOB is used to control this by assigning a new (i.e.…different) number to the third army.

One of the team-members should know how this is done or if it’s possible.

Apart from modern religio-cultural conflicts I can't think of anywhere in history outside of fantasy where there's 3 sided fights. Many battles like Bosworth had a contingent that was undecided which side it would join, but in the end they showed their support for one side or the other.

I know it would def be unrealistic, but we'd still give it a try...I saw Davinci post (above) that he thought SOW might accommodate 3 armies...if so, I wonder if the new scenario generator would as well?
