Formations

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Formations

Post by Pom »

Hi all,I'm looking for some help.

I'm working on a Crimean mod and I want the Russian line infantry to move and fight in column(by divisions)see below, whilst the rest of the world uses the standard line formations.

Is this possible, and if so how?

Thanks

Pom.

Just change the default fighting and marching formations in unitsglobal.csv, columns Z & AA.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Thanks for the reply Marching Thru Georgia, but that was the first place I went,

The attachment Untitled.jpg is no longer available

but it still came up in line formation, tried taking out every other mod in case of conflicts, but still line.

I can get them to form column by changing the Lvl5 drills, but of course this changes everyone,I've also tried swapping the drills file for a vanilla one.

I'll carry on having a play,at least I now know that I am in the right file.

Thanks again.

I would guess that the only way to get that to work would be to go through the drills.csv file.

I would also guess that you might have to create a new formation to keep the AI from using it, since the default Column Formation has the can't fire for that formation turned off.

You will have to replace the 0 with a 1 in the J Column of that formation in the drills.csv file.

Basically, if you turn that feature on, the AI will attempt to fight while in the column formation, and not deploy into line during a battle.

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

If you are talking about the initial formation at the start of the game, that is set in defines.ini. You'll find it under sandbox: MainFormation=DRIL_Lvl4_Inf_Line

You can create your own division level formation that uses the appropriate brigade formation so all the regiments start out in column by division.

Thanks Davinci,I did change the drills.csv, and got the formation I wanted but for every unit,I want it to be the default formation for the Russian line only.

Hi,Marching Thru Georgia,
Didn't know about that, will have a play later.

Thanks
Pom.

EDIT...
Ok,I was being a little dim,now that you've mentioned about the initial formation,I realised that I hadn't given the game a chance. When I ran a battle, sure enough the units used the formations I wanted.

That last pic is interesting - do I see a kneeling while reloading sprite?

I assume when you said "riflemen" you meant "infantry" since the Russians in the Crimean War were not equipped with rifles. It was one reason they were shot to pieces by the French and British and favoured bayonet charges in their dense columns.

I agree the Crimea is a great war to base a mod on since the different tactics do produce a very different game to both ACW and Napoleonic.

Yes there are some kneeling sprites,I haven't done them for all the units as I think that would add too many sprites,a couple more below.

I've been looking at Crimean sites, and many of them say that some of the Russian light infantry, were armed with rifles,a Belgian Luttich, not only that but that most of the French didn't get the Minnie until late into the war,the Guard and elite units being the first, with the rest of the army either with muskets(Model 1842) or converted rifles(M1848 a'Tige pattern).
There are a few conflicting views out there.

This shouldn't affect the mod too much as my plan is still to have the Russians in some form of column, with reduced fire but higher melee stats,it's just a case of how I try to do the light infantry who skirmished in front of them. Also planning to slow them down, this should give the better trained allies time to shoot holes in them.

But of course I've got to get it balanced, otherwise it will turn into a very dull mod.

Thanks Tank
Pom.

Wow, your Bersaglieri and Rifles Brigade look amazing. The kneeling sprites look very cool in those formations.

Beautiful work, Pom. Those Rifles look great.

If I remember correctly the Brit rifle regts never used flags. A silver hunting horn icon might do to help players deploy them.
