Hi team.
Playing in sandbox mode I've had two experiences with cavalry that I believe should be addressed.
1) Cavalry charging or advancing in line into woods. This shouldn't be allowed, IMHO.
I suppose this could be technically possible, but the unit should automatically route due to the disorder it would suffer.
2) Cavalry charging or advancing in line into or through a town. Shouldn't be allowed, IMHO.
Cavalry should be limited to road movement through towns.
I have read where cavalry (Polish lancers serving under the French in Spain) once charged down an urban road in column of fours, but got pretty messed up doing so.
Thanks for your consideration.
Regards, CJ.
Please put limits on cavalry

Re: Please put limits on cavalry
There was a significant town melee between the British and French cavalry at Genappe the evening before Waterloo so I think cavalry in towns is okay. One could argue that squares should not be formed in towns either as infantry could just form "one side" of a square right across a street between two buildings for the same effect. I think town fights tend to be a minor thing though and you'd have to define "town" as well. How would you apply this to some towns like Plancenoit that have some very open spaces in some areas, or very small groups of buildings like Smohain? Where do you draw the line?
I can see this being a lot of work for little useful return.
As to cavalry in woods and broken terrain I agree. I know the game checks for the terrain type the cavalry STARTS in so they won't charge through woods or out of them, but the charging ending IN them is just as critical. Our old KS mod for the Gettysburg game had a method whereby cavalry would not melee in a greyscale terrain type above a certain defensive factor which allowed them to melee in orchards but not woods or dense woods. Note that we applied the limitation to MELEE and not CHARGING. Cavalry could still charge into woods but would stop short and do nothing until the AI or player ordered them back. That would be an easy fix to apply.
In addition I'd like to see square formation banned by a similar method in woods, dense woods, marshes and similar adverse terrain (probably okay in orchards).

HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.
