No, the forces must be blasted out of forts with artillery or musket fire. Although there was a small amount of hand-to-hand combat in LHS and Hougoumont in the actual battle, we felt there wasn't enough to justify that feature, at least for now.

Are you referring to a certain scenario? There is a bug in the 4th scenario where you can't occupy LHS, it will be fixed in the first patch.

The theory that the way to capture buildings is to shoot them up is serious misreading of military history in general and Napoleonic tactics in particular. I will grant that artillery was needed to soften up the target, but you needed large caliber guns to do any real damage or howitzers to set the buildings on fire if they were largely made of wood. Smaller caliber artillery, even up to 6lb guns could be ineffective depending on the type of buildings being attacked.

The suggestion that you could drive an enemy out of stout buildings with musket fire is rather laughable. The only way to contest buildings or a built up areas was to assault them and clear the buildings in close combat.

This explains a lot about my misfortune in attacking LHS! :)

I agree that we should be able to melee occupied buildings.

So do we. But again, it wasn't a key part of the battle, and it would have delayed release of the game. Getting occupy-able buildings into the game, something we've never had in any generation of the engine, was a huge accomplishment. We wanted to get something in that was fun, realistic, and with room to grow.
