Death of a Leader

I have restarted work on my 100 days campaign and have reached a stage where the Battle of Ligny has been completed. I am evaluating the results and am currently thinking about how to handle the situation where a Leader has been reported as dead. In this context I am interested to know the current impact when this happens during a scenario. I assume that the replacement leader who appears will have some loss of leadership/experience abilities. Is this the same in every case i.e. do replacement leaders all have the same values?

My current thinking is that I do not want to replace dead leaders for subsequent battles with a newly named person as that would be both more work in terms of modifying OOB's and scenario.csv files and be potentially confusing for someone already familiar with officer's names and positions in the OOB. I plan to keep the same name but reduce his leadership/experience abilities to reflect a person new in the post.

I do not think it would be right just to reduce the abilities to whatever level currently happens during a scenario as that would have been an emergency replacement by whomever was conveniently to hand. There is notionally a day or two between battles in my campaign so a more considered substitute should be possible. I am thinking therefore of creating a random factor to reflect loss of experience with the in scenario values providing a base level and the previous officer's stats being the maximum.

I notice in the casualty results report that officers are described as "Dead" but never classed as wounded - does "Dead" notionally include wounded so should some of the "Dead" legitimately be brought back to life? Could someone explain what the category "Lost" means - would some "Lost" Officers perhaps be wounded?

Too complicated for me to undertake, I recommend leaving dead officers to the game's preferences and fill in historic replacements as you see fit, or, make all officers immortal.

Replacement officers are always VERY low in abilities.

Lost means all the officer's troops have been killed or captured. Routed may be included, I'm not sure. :unsure:

"Dead" to me will include wounded or captured. It happens when the officer sprite contacts an enemy unit and you get the death animation.

"Lost" as Reb B says refers to the command of the general, not the general himself. He is okay

Thank you for your answers. I have checked out a couple of the leaders who died in my Ligny test and in both cases the replacements had experience 30 as opposed to previous values of 60.

I think I will probably just reduce the experience by 1 (10) in the case of Leaders being killed for the next battle.

The next issue I have is to decide on how many extra men and guns the Prussians should lose during their retreat after various types of outcome. I currently have objective values such that 15,000 might represent victory and 20,000 major victory. Historically the Prussians lost one battery during their retreat when it was overtaken by cavalry but then won one gun back again.

The 3 Prussian Corps were not consistent in their artillery - Third Corps had significantly fewer batteries. My thought is that for every 5,000 VPs over 10k I will have I and II Corps lose 2 guns and III Corps lose 1 gun. These losses will be multiplied by the number of "fresh" cavalry divisions sent by the French to harry the retreating Prussians. In my test game the French had 23k victory points and will probably assign 3 fresh cavalry divisions plus one not fresh and 3 infantry divisions to the pursuit. This would mean that the Prussians will lose an extra 30 guns to go along with the 20 marked as captured at the end of the scenario - a total of 50 losses. My plan is to steadily reduce all the batteries rather than withdraw whole units as that might impact the coding of the AI thus in this test campaign each Prussian battery will typically lose two guns and be reduced from 8 to 6.

I will include my thoughts about losses of men in another post to allow you to comment on this artillery suggestion.
