My Top 5 Books on Antietam, What're Yours?

Post by bschulte »

Guys,

I took some time to write up a blog entry on the Top 5 books on the Battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign of 1862. I'm interested to see what everyone thinks. Did I do a decent job? Did I leave YOUR favorite book out? I'm including my own Top 5 here for you to see, but I also encourage you to click the link, head to the blog entry, and tell me YOUR top 5.

1. Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam
By Stephen W. Sears

2. The Maryland Campaign of September 1862: Ezra A. Carman’s Definitive Study of the Union and Confederate Armies at Antietam
Edited by Joseph Pierro

3. Taken at the Flood: Robert E. Lee and Confederate Strategy in the Maryland Campaign of 1862
By Joseph L. Harsh

4. The Antietam Campaignand Antietam: Essays on the 1862 Maryland Campaign

1. Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam is definitely the best IMO and is my favorite. It's almost scary how how much the author knows about the battle, right down to the smallest detail.

"Antietam: The Soldiers' Battle" by John Priest

I always like the "then and now" books so I'll also include Frassanito's Antietam book

"Landscape Turned Red" and "Taken at the Flood" are both excellent. "Landscape Turned Red" I read for pleasure and "Taken at the Flood" I had to read for Grad school.

MarkT turned me on to the Frassanito book as well as The Gleam of Bayonets, by James Murfin. Very good read. The intro was written by one of my teachers in college (James I. Robertson) so there's bonus points for this book.

I have Robertson's biography of Stonewall Jackson. Great book.

I've read it several times. That man did his research well.

Thanks Ephrum! If you guys click the link to the blog entry Murfin's book is mentioned, along with several of Mike Priest's books, and Scott Mingus' book on wargaming Antietam in miniatures.
