General, I have no division!

Post by Amish John »

This is really a wish list or bug avoidance issue for the new game.

Tonight in TC2M I was playing a Federal division commander. My division was kind of scattered so I ordered them to assemble. After a while they were almost all assembled just like I wanted them and a single Confederate regiment came into view. Without any command from me my whole division deployed to meet the one regiment. I shouldn't have to \"take command\" to avoid this type of mass behavior. Hopefully your new game can avoid this type of reaction to a small threat.

It's been a while since I got down to this detail with the tc2m engine. So for some reason they decided to engage this enemy reg when their morale & fatigue were probably too low. There are so many factors in there, like how bold their brig comm is as well. It would be interesting to see the save, but I can't even be sure I could build tc2m at this point. You'll have to cozy up to ADukes, as finding this sort of stuff is his area. If I get a save in the new engine that shows a similar behaviour, then I can fix it or make it better. Most of this stuff is going to be addressed when we start our testing. But it's a good thing to think of in the AI, just seems unreasonable unless someone has a hell of a pair.

Thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't looking for TC2M support, just passing along something to try and avoid in the new game.

Sure would like to see the new game in the museum shop at the Gettysburg visitor center this time next year.

I realize it was not TC2M support, I just want to avoid mistakes of the past with the new engine.

We were very close to getting prevoius games there, maybe we'll have more luck with this one!

This usually happens for me towards the end of a battle when there is more bird chirpin noises than gunfire heard, typically during mopping-up to get rid of scattered isolated enemy regiments off the map.
Maybe an order by the division commander for all brigades to "go to the sound of gunfire" is what could be going on since as far as i know a Brigade commander can't request reenforcements, i don't know.
TC'ing the Division commanders a couple of times seemed to get rid of the problem although i haven't experimented enough to know if thats conclusively whats going on. Sometimes this is annoying as i'll have a brigade or regiment gaurding a battery or some other strategic area and then they just all leave even with orders to HOLD! Must be invisible couriers involved.

Maybe another option instead? A brigade or regiment commander would have the ability to request reenforcements via a courier from their Division or Brigade commander if they get overwhelmed instead of the entire division automatically moving to wipe out one small low morale enemy regiment.

I think this game should have a very, very, good chance of getting in there.
