I'm having a go at doing my first minor mod by amending one of the existing scenarios.
I'm assuming this is blindingly obvious although I can't seem to work it out but how do I set which commander I am?
Thanks in advance.

The COC (Chain of Command) numbers in the scenario.csv file are your commander's numbers. Transfer them to the scenario.ini file as seen in this example (WL08):
[rank]
cmdlvl1=1
cmdlvl2=1
cmdlvl3=1
cmdlvl4=6
cmdlvl5=0
cmdlvl6=0
Go left to right, the battalion level is not included for commander ID purposes.

Thanks for that. Completely obvious now it's been pointed out to me of course!

Re: Who am I as a player?
Don't remember, but I probably asked questions about that one back in TC2M days, when I began modding. Learning how the files talk to each other leaves "obvious" in the dust. I don't think the manual or SDK even cover all the avenues, besides, who's got the time to LEARN all the interconnections by reading and memorizing. For me the learning only really happens with the doing, and redoing, that's what the art of modding is all about.Thanks for that. Completely obvious now it's been pointed out to me of course!
...And of course, asking questions
