New Found Music

talking bout new music you've discovered lately, not what you already know. We know what you like; tell us about stuff you found out you like now. We might already know about it but that's cool. first off, i'm old enough to dismiss Justin Timberlake's music, but he was a hoot on SNL the other week. Hulu/youtube it if you haven't seen him, the kid's got comedic chops.

Anyhow, today i was running errands and on my local jazz station they were profiling Fats Waller, who i hardly knew but soon wanted to learn more. Sang "Your Feet's Too Big", a tune i hold to my heart (size 13). Most people of the time looked down on him, thought he was a big clown, but it's good stuff - sang "Ain't Misbehavin'". go check it out.

I think Fats Waller wrote "Honeysuckle Rose," a classic jazz standard. He wrote some good stuff and did have a bit of a comic flare. He was a bit early for my time though. I like jazz from the mid-50's to mid-60s more than from his period, which was mostly before WWII (I think).

I saw EC and Steve Winwood last Feb. 2008 at The Garden. What a show!! I just saw them in NJ last Wed. and they changed it up a bit. Still some really good stuff. I think they have a new album out.

Many of you probably know that I'm a Rock N Roll man (old and new), but I'm also a BIG fan of jazz (especially 50's and 60's). I actually studied jazz guitar for two years at The Berklee School of Music in Boston.

I've been listening to Cannonball Adderley/Miles Davis' album Something Else. The version of Autumn Leaves has to be one of the greatest jazz performances ever recorded.

AGREED! Great version! Although I also the Bill Evans Trio version on Portrait in Jazz. Once they come out of a piano/bass exchange in the middle, it really swings.

I got hooked on Jerry Vale who sang "Pretend you Don't See Her" in the movie "Goodfellas". Probably has something to do with having mostly Italians in our "gang" when we were growing up in a small coal mining town in western Pennsylvanis in the 50s and 60s. You bet it was tough growing up in a coal mining town. A lot of hard put and desparate people. All our pictures in our yearbook had front and profile views.

here's another: i've known about Camera Obscura but never really listened till about a week ago and it's grown on me. Sort of navel-gazing college prog pop but i love it, it mellows me out.

Yes, excellent version as well. One of my favorite jazz line-ups, just Piano, Bass and Drums. I can remember listening to a piano/bass/drums trio at my hotel in New Orleans (N'awlins) when I visited a several years ago. They were taking requests and I requested "All Of Me" since it's one of my favorite Jazz standards. Good times..

I know the name. I just had to check Google Earth to make sure I knew where it was. Don't think I was ever there. I grew up in Windber. Are you from that area?
