The ANV was on the downward slide, in terms of amount of men available, and Jackson's/Lee's penchant for attack would have run them into the ground anyways. Say Jackson lives through Chancellorsville and heads on to Gettysburg. Grant still wins at Vicksburg and comes east, he gets his mass of men and then we are right back to Grant vs. Lee 1864. IMO, the ANV was over as an offensive army after Chancellorsville/Gettysburg.

No Burnside showed up for many of the last of the battles but as usual he couldn't even do simple tasks like filling the gap between the II and V Corps during the Wilderness it took him forever. Also he screwed up a good plan for the crater he sent his men straight into it.

Grant and Meade did that; They didn't want the Colored Troops slaughtered because then it would look like that they were just wasting the Coloreds for the hell of it. Burnside had ordered the Colored Troops to train and train in the weeks before the attack, and then was overruled once the tunnel was actually finished and the attack ready.
