Ok I am getting 8-10fps over the battle. where its most busy. as I move away a bit It will rise and further out I get 24-26 fps. windows xp 32 4 gigs of ram HD4870 card I forget the ram on.
I am sure if I upgrade to a 64bit I could then put my 8 gigs and I should see better performance

*If* I am not mistaken, there are ways to reduce the number of men displayed in each regiment.
Does anyone know if that be done ? and If so how please?
Options - on page one \ Custom Difficulty Settings \ AI Regiment Strength
Anything over ( 100 ) adds by a precentage of regiment
Anything under ( 100 ) minus by a precentage of regiment
Don't quote me on the ( precentage thing )!

I can’t seem to adjust that setting if unit sizes could remain the same historical size but the number of sprites representing them reduced by 50% we would get a massive FPS boost.
Found You have to click custom but It just reduces the enemy units.

Now, does that just reduce the ratio of men present to actual size (i.e. keeps the regiment at the same historical strength but represents it w/less people on screen) or does it reduce the actual historical strength of the regiment?
I
think that it will reduce the actual strength of the regiments, but I'm not sure if this is for
Open Play...( Sand-Box-Thing ), or
Scenarios , or both of them.
Jubal Early - I'm not sure about the
reducing the sprites, without the
SDK , it
might be possible by
editing the
formations file , but it may also be
Hard-Coded .

There is no option to reduce the men per sprite without the sdk.
The fastest/lowest settings are:
uniforms - low
percent trees - 10
off-map trees - off
terrain draw dist - low
map objects - low
off-map terrain - off
then you can lower the max draw distances to 1000
That is how I debug because it's the fastest for me and the debugger runs very slow
You can do a study and set all but 1 of these high, so you can see how much each effects your frame rate. But remember that a rate of 11-12 is fast for this game. The largest scenarios can go even slower on a fast machine during fighting.
