And there won't be any decent square either.
Napoleonic and ACW battles are so different, it sounds very difficult to create a single engine to handle both of them.
It will be probably a whole new game in the future.

If no other cavalry units fire guns, smoke, there still may be a way. Make new cavalry formations with a minimum distance or retreat option enabled.

How about an ammo count of 0?

Is the one provided by the game not decent enough?

But would the unit not try to resupply continually?

Like this
I spent last night trying to have cavalry units charging against infantry, but again no results. I followed all ideas from Jim, RedBugler and ADukes, but nothing. Probably it's my little knowledge of the game, but I wonder why there is a square formation available in drills.csv when there isn't the cavalry against which use this formation.
Cheers

Wonderful! how can you get that square ?
I saw there are squares in drills.csv but how can you get them in the game ?
I thought it was there for a future game.
If we have squares formations and charge action implemented in the game i guess it won't be a nightmare to modify the game so the cavalry can charge.

I made it only to show you the square,in unitglobal.csv under the Fighting Formation column, I replaced DRIL_Lvl6_Inf_LineFight with DRIL_Lvl6_Inf_Square.
Here you can see a model of a cuirassier taken from Napoleon Total War by The Lordz
and here a French infantry model that I was working on
but now I give up and I return to the Marlburian units for TC2M.
Cheers

Great ! I hope we will be able to use your models soon.
Implementing Napoleonic cavalry with the current logic of the game sounds difficult to me though i didn't investigate much in the sdk (only to make a mod with 85 000 men per side with new graphics scale).
Cavalry and infrantry must have specifific behavior i am not sure we can implement.
Usually cavalry doesn't charge squares and infantry threatened by cavalry uses the square
formation.
For example, in the game I don't see any change in the behavior of infantry resulting from cavalry unit being in the vicinity so i don't know how the ai will use the square formation.
May be drills contain some parameters to do that but its to be confirmed.

There was a Confederate regiment, (don't remember which one), that was worried that it was going to be charged by cavalry on day 1 and formed into a square.
I participated in a multi-player game last night which specifically looked at cavalry charging infantry and the melee that ensued. The cavalry always lost. Norb & Co. are working on the cavalry AI so that mounted cavalry will be more useful than just for scouting. It's necessary for the East Gettysburg battle. I'll also be advocating for the other important cavalry effects, e.g. overcharging the target, inability to reform for some period of time after a charge and of course cutting down any infantry foolish enough to receive a charge while in line.
By the way, your figures look great!
