I spent that day like any other Tuesday. I sent my oldest son to Kindergarten. Then I piled the twins into the baby jogger and went out for a run. It was a beautiful day. It was my middle son's 1st day of preschool. So I jogged over with the twins and met my wife and middle son at the school and saw him off on his first day of preschool. Then I jogged back home and my wife went out for breakfast with her friend. I got a call from my sister in law about something bad happening in NYC and she wasn't sure were my brother in law, Gene, was. He is NYFD, Ladder 27, Engine 46. He was working that day and was generally stationed in the south Bronx but they get detailed out to cover shifts all over the city. He many times worked in midtown. So we spent that day trying to figure out where the Hell he was. We didn't find out that he was OK until 2pm. Ladder 27, Engine 46 lost 1 firefighter that day, John Marshall. Rescue 3 is attached to Gene's house and they lost 6. That day really sucked.

I was working on the Mall for the Smithsonian (yup, another federal employee).
We were in the process of opening another gallery and the designer said a plane had gone into one of the Trade Towers. I asked what kind of plane and she said an airliner. We kept on working with one ear to the news (security had a TV going in their break room).
The second plane hit, then there was an explosion at the Pentagon across the river, then a rumor of a bomb at the State Department, then we were told to shut it down and take the southern emergency route out of town. So we joined the croud in traffic. Everyone was calm.
I remember a homeless guy pushing a grocery cart with all his worldly goods in it. On the front of the cart he had an American flag flying.
That day we were all one.

I went to work that day thinking about planning something for our children's 15th birthday that day. Then when it started, we were watching the tv in the Company's Data Center lounge.
I was glad my kids were 15 on that day because they were able to understand what had happened on their birthday. I have to believe that if they were younger, it could have affected them differently.
Though they do not talk about 9/11, I wonder what they think of on that day with the yearly rememberence. I will have to ask them one day..
The scary part was after the plane went down in PA., the news kept reporting that they thought there was at least another plane missing. My home is about 7 miles from Indian Point and wondering it it was another target....

I came home from school, and had just sat down, when I watched the second plane hit the building live.
