When we have played courier multiplayer games in the past we used courier by brigade. This is still a point and click method of controlling your troops but you get the delay of the courier and the possibility of the couriers not been intercepted.
It would be really interesting to try a game using the courier message system. I have played some great sandbox games using this method, particularly on the Alpine Map where strategic planning is really needed. There’s nothing like thinking you have successfully sent a Corps on a flanking march to find it been flanked by the AI!!
