Yes, that's because it takes time to click on one button then another. In that intervening moment, the AI commander has plenty of time to decide on some course of action, usually not what you are intending. With the courier, he gets the entire list of orders all at once. No time for thinking. :laugh:They seem to be much more responsive to courier messages when I want to get their direction of advance back on track.
Courier Messages... What do you use for this?

Hi MTG,
Thanks for your very interesting reply. I'll haveto give this a try. Could you point me to the AAR you mention and the mod (if latter is available)?
Thanks again,

This is the AAR in NSD News

The mod can be found here in the mods section. It's labeled 1.102 but works just fine with the latest game patch.

Wow !
Have just tried a battle using your mod and suggestions, using one division vs 1 division in the sandbox. One div commander got killed or captured, various regiments were routed and I suspect I will be court martialled. A very interesting, and very different experience.
Thanks again!

Yes, it's a very humbling experience to see a battle spiral completely out of your control and know there is absolutely nothing you can do. I still have that happen on occasion. I'll set up some really clever plan, only to have the AI be completely uncooperative and thrash me.

I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Why is it called "no orders"? What does that mean exactly?

However, it is important in courier play for moving your troops, especially arty...see MTG's courier threads.
In scenario scripting, it is the default order, and makes troop movement manageable thus minimizing the use of TC. Once orders are assigned, the AI pretty much takes over in directing troops toward those orders.

The AI decides what to do partially in reponse to what stance it is given, (probe, defend, hold, etc). If the enemy is near, the AI will fight his troops in a way that is in keeping with his interpretation of his stance. If you want to move a sub-commander and his units and the enemy is near, then the first thing to is issue the 'No orders' stance. This cancels the current stance. Why is it called "no orders"?
