While modern day U.S. Marines might wear their formal 'go to meeting uniforms' in a public parade for example, they definitely would wear their cammi combat duds in combat.
Same with those Zouaves. I've read nothing nowhere on Confederate reactions to those silly uniforms on the battlefield but i think in the least they had to be astonished those guys would actually go to war in flamboyant bright red PJs.

You have to put yourself in the context of the times. Although the Zouave uniforms look kind of clownish to us today, at the time of the civil war (and prior to the civil war) they were closely associated with elite troops of the French army, Algerian service. The French troops were in the forefront of developing innovative tactics for their (at the time) unconventional warfare in Algeria. The French army at the time was considered the best in the world and it was natural for armies to try and emulate those considered the best. Zouave militia units were common in the US, both North and South, before the war. French Zouaves dated from the 1830s and they and their distinctive uniforms would have been known in the US, especially to those interested in military matters.

Prior to the advent our present day sports superstars, 19th century military figures of note served as heroic models to be admired and copied. It was only natural to copy the uniforms with the thought that if we look like them we will fight like them. The uniforms were a matter of great pride with the troops as are the specialized uniforms of today's troops.

In addition, they did look spiffy (in their minds eye, it must be). And they grey and blue uniforms produce an eyesore, why not mix it up sometimes?

We have 3 types of Zouaves in the game - Confederates had Zouaves too. We are trying to be as historically accurate as possible but we can't do all the variations of the uniforms.

I personally love the red pj guys. The more flamboyant the uniform the more fun it is to research and make. They do show up on a battlefield and the French tragically learnt that lesson in 1914.

Not sure if the following has been asked about the uniforms.

Will there uniforms that will be tattered, ripped and will there be soldiers that have bloody bandages on their heads fighting in battle ?

Thanks

Yeah, I believe we answered that somewhere before, can't find it myself.

Answer is that we looked into that and wanted to do that, but every tattered uniform we add means that we have to take away one of the other uniforms. So we decided that we would rather have more variety than tattered.

Why can't you just make one uniform for each side that has tatters? Then you use these for the wounded men.

I don't understand why you would take away uniforms to create more.

Each uniform set takes up a significant amount of RAM. That is why one of the performance options is to use only 1 uniform set per side. We currently have about as many uniform sets as higher end systems can handle. If we add more, then the number of systems that can run will full options becomes quite small:( . We don't want people to have to go out and by a $3,000+ system just to run the game with the full set of Hi-Res uniforms:unsure: . So where we are is at the place where adding a new uniform set of any type means we have to eliminate one that we already have in the game:angry: .

In the FWIW department!
The way PCs seem to be obsoleted every couple years when Intel, AMD or uSoft releases one of their new products, i think the game should be UPWARD future compatible as people will inevitably sooner or later upgrade their rigs. I started out with a 286, then a 386, 486, P-4 and now an Intel2-quad.
If i were CEO of NSD   , considering resources and time of course, i'd put as much hi-res bells 'n whistle OPTIONS as practical in the game. Again OPTIONS OPTIONS and more OPTIONS to keep most everyone satisfied at any given time.
Just my 2 centavos once again!:)
