I played many, many battles using that battle generator.

There was a bug though that "early" reinforcements always came later than "late" ones. :P

 It may be too late to submit bugs for that one.

It would be cool if the next engine was designed for generic black powder warfare. That would allow the norb team to have a new engine to work with and expand their titles from 1700 to 1900 tweaking/adding the mechanics for each title but not requireing a complete engine rewrite. Napoleonic version  .

After reading the Guns of August, I think someone should come up with a mod or even game for perhaps the most ignored war of all - as far as computer gaming goes: WWI. Especially in the first month, the combat was fluid and hadn't yet settled into trench warfare so it might not be as boring as everyone thinks.

It's been tried, not often with very good results. Plus, one month does not a good historical game make. Honestly, it's not a good sign that one of the best games for WWI is a browser-based flash game.

But there's supposed to be a supported mod for RO2 covering WWI, a big part of why I bought the game.

Eventually I'm sure one of the major game makers will get to WWI, but nothing's appeared yet, so don't hold your breath. I did some serious scouring of the internet a while back. The best things to come out thus far are essentially computerized equivalents of board games (think basic map, using cards for units, basically rolls for attack/defend, etc. Pretty tedious (insert obligatory "trench warfare was the essence of tedium, oh ho ho!" joke).

Edit: There is a WWI mod for NTW (or ETW), come to think of it. I tried it and it wasn't half bad except for the constant crashes. Assuming they keep working on it, I might give it a go somewhere down the road.

Great book. Pulitzer prize winner. She also wrote wrote another fascinating book, A Distant Mirror, which is a snapshot of the 14th century and it's many similarities to modern times.

PS: Check this out for WWI mods of Close Combat. Tim Catherall is a member of the NSD team and a big Great War fan.

Well. . . SOW is a pretty decent historical game which covers only 3 days, so. . . . And really, the first month of the first WW would be a pretty big game, several really large and interesting battles of movement: Tannenberg, The Battle of the Frontiers, Mons Canal, The 1st Battle of the Marne.

I'm the one who encouraged Seal to read The Guns of August, which I consider one of the finest history books ever written: http://www.amazon.com/Guns-August-Barba ... 034538623X

Hi, I tried Empire TW and Nap TW and the combat totally sucks- I prefer this game to any other- I like the Civil War and if we could get more real battles that would be the best. The realism here is good especially in the historic battles, it feels real neat to re-enact. Does anyone like Total War- I really don't like it too much except for history tutors. I really don't like the combat- it's just right- clicking over your targets. Kind of unrealistic- it's ok I guess
