Alpine2 - Pending Release Date

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Looks fantastic.

Apline was always one of my favourites because the low amount of objects, trees and vegetation gave the best FPS on my system on the big maps, has it changed much?

PS - I loved the big hills!

PPS - If you lower the hills you cant call it Alpine anymore :)

Looks great, have you used all new textures? I'm a fan of the farm buildings myself, adding a few of those back wouldn't hurt too much would it?

If its a flatter map how about calling it 'Lowpine' (which sounds like it could be a village somewhere)?

I agree. You could almost be looking at a colour photo. Well done!

Thanks, Damned Black Hat, Crikey, Con20or, Chamberlain, Saddletank, gunship24, Jubal Early, and Martin James .

Crikey yes, I have stole some of your excellent terrain, your blending skills far exceed mine, and thanks for the tip about the blur tool that really does come in handy.

Con20or & Saddletank – yes, good point about the name, isn’t EL an abbreviation for elevation – so I might call it ELPine1 & ELPine2 .

Also, I was trying to find a sort of happy-medium by giving the Napoleon Group and the Multi-Player group a different map that didn’t have any of the houses and fences.

Also – I think that I have exhausted the FPS by included the wheat-fields and a few corn-fields , but this is about normal with the larger five-mile maps.

I’m testing this with roughly thirty thousand men per side and the frames are playable, but I’m hitting the bottom of the barrel.

The new Splat graphics are great, but they do take up about 2-6 FPS but that depends on different things.

The only way to get any better at this map-making-process is to release the maps, and let the community decide what works and what doesn’t work.

D, You mention the drag on fps with your splats or some of them by 2-6 fps. If you are layering them at all, it increases the file size by double the KB's sometimes. If this occurs, when you save the jpg when you are done you may decrease the quality from lets say 90 or whatever you have it saved at down to a 80 quality and it will save it as a much smaller file size. Although you would think that would cause a noticeable lessing of the detail of the jpg, it is realy unoticeable at that amount. But it will definetly reduce the size and increase fps slightly. Check your splat jpg file sizes. Anything over 175kb is definetly going to effect fps. This seems to be helping me, maybe you can see if it helps you out.
Great looking work my friend keep it up!

"EL" is also another way to say "God"
Well, this is God's Country , and both armies did share the same belief in the same god, but I have always been under the impression that it stood for an abbreviated form of elevation , but I could be wrong.

2ndTexas – Although the map-making-process has been around for several years, I still refer to these as being a sort of first-generation-maps that are now being released by the Map-Making-Team .

With that said, the maps will probably get better with time, a sort of learning-curve that is associated with learning anything that is new.

I think that it is good that there are now three maybe four different people making the maps at this time, also with each one doing things that are slightly different than the rest.

This is important in the fact that in time with a variety of different methods, we will have a better understanding of what works, and more importantly what doesn't work.

The file sizes that you mentioned above is understandable, but almost all of my files are larger than normal, considering that instead of going with the default size of 512x512 , I elected to go with the size of 768x768 .

Again, I'm going against the grain, and trying, only different things that have not been done at this time.

My opinion of this is to let the community have the final say as to what works and what doesn't work, considering that the maps are designed for their use.

The old “tried and true” method will surely get us to the point of “yesterday” , but I say let's push forward with all new idea's, in the hope that this will get us to a new point of today , that will be surpassed tomorrow [/].

BTW - Excellent Work - on your pine trees, I plan on using some of those with this map.
