I'm not following this. It sounds like you are "spiting" a brigade, not detaching it. If I hit Gordon's detach button he just is detached from his division....correct? This way he won't receive orders given to his division commander. I don't think he actually spits his brigade into two smaller brigades.
Could you post some screen shots illustrating what you are doing?
Attaching a Regiment to a different brigade:

Under the Orders Command play around with the icons that I have circled below, after you have done that several times, the rest of what I wrote above will make more sense.I'm not following this.

All,
I found this a very interesting topic, so I followed on from what DaV was doing. I must say this - If you are not using this part of the game, you are missing A LOT! It has opened up a new level of tactical opportunities for Command. I haven't played it yet for the ACW side, but on th Nap Side, it's awesome, especially with the huge Austrian Brigades - think of Waquant's 9 Battalion Brigade of Bellgarde 1st. ArmeeKorps. Rather unweildy, until you hit the magic button and VOILA! you have three manageable 3 battalion Regiment/Brigade sized units. Instant local reserve if you want. Need that extra unit to go flank someone - bang! There you go. However, you must be careful - the AI will split a 6 Battalion brigade by regiment, depending on number of Battalions in the Regiment, which is WAY COOL to my way of thinking. I haven't tried it with Batteries, yet, but only because I hadn't thought about it until just now.
Anyway, think about it. It is more simple than you may realize.
En Avant!

Jack - How is the New Year going!
I didn't add this part, so I'll mention it now.
The new Commander is also listed under the Courier Orders, so you can give the new Commander movement orders by courier just as you could with the default OOB.

DaV,
Yes, figured that out. Also, Batteries CAN be split in half. I haven't tried it but there is the detach button and if you hover over it, it says detach by section. Sweet!
